Did you notice one man in the line up refused to face the tricolour during the anthem - Morrow, the goalscorer. Thought that was bad form.

I noticed that too. Where's he from?
Hes from Dungiven, well just outside the town, think maybe the son a protestant farmer

Gaffer

Could you imagine the uproar if Niall McGinn faced a different direction than the rest of the Norn Iron team during GSTQ .

He would get the same treatment as Neil Lennon received and there would be a big thing about his action in the media.

No doubt about it!

He's playing in the League of Ireland yet refuses even to face the flag! I'm sure all other nationalities playing in that league at least turn around.

Simply bad manners or bitterness.

I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Didnt see hit, did he deliberatly face the opposite direction or did he stand facing straight ahead, the way he was already facing?

ONeill

All players turned as the anthem started to face the flag, 90 degrees. Morrow didn't and stood facing the crowd with his team-mate to his left having to stare at the side of his face.

If he had been playing in Spain, Croatia, New Zealand or Tonga, in their cup final for a club side, would be have refused to stand for the flag/anthem of the national league? I'd guess 99.99% he would have acknowleged it, out of respect and decency. This was clearly a political snub. Cannot see any other reason.

Hard to know his motivation without actually knowing him?

Personally when in america I did not put my hand over my heart when the americans did during the anthem for example. It was not a political snub - i stood and respected it.

ONeill

Nor did half the players yesterday sing it. They just gave the flag/anthem protocol respect.

Fair enough, the lad may feel a little uneasy, especially with fellas from home perhaps not happy with him turning to face the flag. However, it was a statement of some sorts.

No doubt about it!
From what I recall on Wednesday evening, Sammy Clingan stood with his head bowed, and McGinn may merely have stood motionless whilst GSTQ was played, whilst other players mostly sang it and/or stood to attention.

Either way, I couldn't care less how/why any of the players acted as they did during the preliminaries. All I care about is how they perform when the game starts. In which case, Sammy Clingan was unanimously praised for keeping going, even with a cut head and a knock on the leg, whilst certain of his teammates looked less than interested. Consequently, he was the fitting choice to be handed the Captain's armband when Taylor went off. Indeed, it is displays like this which have made Sammy one of the most popular players amongst the fans, such that he has now got his own song ("There's only one Sammy Clingan, Only One Sammy Clingan, He comes from the Falls and he's got Big Balls, Singing in a Clingan Wonderland!")   :D

As for McGinn of Derry City, everyone I've spoken to was delighted for the lad, and highly impressed by the spirit and endeavour (and pace and control etc) he showed when he came on as substitute. He was one of the few bright sparks on an otherwise dreary evening.

P.S. Anyone from Donaghmore St. Pats GFC know whether there are any more McGinns to be had? We'll take all you can produce, thanks very much! And maybe another Chris Baird from Rasharkin, if that's not being greedy!  ;)

P.P.S. If Sammy Morrow did behave as described in the FAI Cup Final, then he should have shown a bit more respect imo.
