Well Paul McFlynn definitely watched Glen the amount he went on about them

Wildweasel74

Well considering Flynn watched a lot and we were utter garbage for most of the year, what difference does it make? They will have plenty to watch from now onwards won't they.

lets go back over the well trodden ground, who's not there that should be?

Big sweeping statements about men who are there and potentially men that are coming in. Plenty game time for reserve and back up players during the league this year and I don't know any who stamped any position down.
I've seen every team in senior league this year and bar Sean Kearney and maybe and its a big maybe Ryan Mc Nicholl theres no new faces banging on Tallys door.

Why McNicholl a big maybe, seen him last week, he one of the better forwards in the league.

Let's wait to see how he goes in the championship. I'm unconvinced

Newbridge going well in league despite have 2or 3 lads on county panel. Only league I know but their panel must be decent.

Good solid base to work off there.

I thought Conor Mc Ateer last year looked like he deserved a chance but needs alot of work on physicality side of things. Mark Doc and Calum Mc Grogan good solid club players but are they county standard? Did they walk away or not make the cut I'm not sure.
Jack Doherty - Glen has talent but doesn't seem to fancy the commitment.

Goalkeeper wise Ryan Scullion is the best in Derry after Odhran Lynch would like to see him back.

I wouldn't be putting much emphasis on Newbridge running away with league, they're super fit and on the crest of a wave after last year so in much better place than most clubs. Slaughtneil are sitting 3rd from bottom but county hurling and football means they've been running out a reserve team most weeks. Kilrea won league last year and nobody saying they should have more men on Tally squad.

Any word on when the championship draws are? Just over a month/6 weeks until due to start.

Ball

Have to agree with those on about the lack of promotion from the county board, its getting worse every year. There was more in the mid ulster back in the day! Surely it cant be that difficult to sort.

Still no word of championship draw either?

On the Senior team, be interesting to see if theres any potential stand outs for a call up but cant see it, i think most of the stand out players are there or dont want to commit.

The Ciaran Meenagh talk is silly, "go all out to get him", why would he leave down now? There mustve been a reason he left derry to go to down so as much as id love to have him back i cant see it happening.

More likely tally will bring mcgilly in. Was he involved with a county team somewhere this year too?

Tally might not happen, but it's far from silly. He was with Derry from Div 4, teaches in Ballinascreen and would know the players and staff well. He technically won an Ulster with Derry and got us within a whisker of beating Kerry in an AISF. From what I gather he was offered the role, but didn't want to be the main man as it would have meant giving up his teaching role which he wasn't prepared to do and is fully understandable given how volatile the Senior County Management roles are.
Owenbeg might be a handier drive than wherever Down train, and with players returning we have a lot of potential.
There'd be a lot of positives for Meenagh should he have the opportunity to return, and a lot of positives for Derry too.

Absolutely spot on. He's the man they need. Players know and trust him. It remains to be seen who tally goes for. Probably will be mcgilly. But there's still space for one more with mcflynn and mcguckin gone. I really think it should be Meenagh. People saying why would he leave down now? Derry are still a more exciting proposition than Down. Next year should be a lot better personnel wise to.

Derry Optimist

Recent positive posters regarding the wonderful coaching qualities of Ciaran Meenagh, brought to mind the first time that I ever saw him in action on the sideline. It was a Division Four Derry League game against Wexford in Bellaghy in March 2019..

Under the stewardship of then manager Damian McErlain, Ciaran really micro managed, unobtrusively but very efficiently, every movement of every player while at the same time ensuring that the whole team were evolving into an impressive unit. It was also the first time that I saw such an encouraging motivation of players from a member of a management team.

The last time that I saw his powerful leadership qualities was when, in Derry's best - ever display in recent times, he almost led Derry to an historic victory over Kerry in the 2023 All Ireland semi - final just two years ago. If he can be released from his present commitments, he can be a powerful catalyst to help Paddy Tally et al achieve the ultimate prize. What a fantastic boost his recall would be for players, management and supporters alike.

I know that it has often and justifiably been said that all of the best players who WANT to play for Derry are already on the current panel. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the presence of  Ryan Scullion,Ryan Dougan, Ryan McNicholl Sean Kearney, Jack Doherty and former Derry u20 captain, the very talented Iarlaith Donaghy of Lissan, would increase considerably Derry's chances of further silverware.
