Quote from: Ryan O on February 02, 2025, 03:42:41 PMPlaying with Gilmore, Mark Doc and Baker will eventually catch up with you. Directly at fault with basic errors for 3-3.
Gilmore continuously holds the ball to long and gets himself in a fluster. We had more than enough scoring opportunities went hunting goals and ended up with nothing. Cassidy, Mc Carron, Murphy, Murray and Toner from play really need to start shouldering some of the weight when getting scores.
Unfortunately due to the quality of players injured we are start at least 4/5 back up players and the subs coming on an 3rd choice for many positions.

I take it you didn't get a chance to see the game today?

Was at it what do you think is wrong?

Well, with the exception of Murphy, all of those players scored from play today..? They contributed 9 points of our total..

Mc Carron hit one shot at goal in 57 odd mins and got a two pointer, Toner scored 3 frees. Murray scored good score when came on and wasted two more chances. If we need a big score at a big moment the ball is more that often worked to Glass, Rogers or Conor Doc. Kerry subs contributed 3-2 ours  0-1

I think the bench is very important. Especially these days.

There's a few lads, without naming people, on the bench this past 4 or 5 years and they haven't pushed on.  Seem, to a certain extent, to be happy to sit on the bench and be part of the panel.

I don't know what goes on at training this past few years but I'd want to see lads really busting themselves and really trying to nail down a place.

Probably a good few counties have these players having the trappings of a county player.

We were brilliant under RG but he played the same 15 or 16 players every game for a few seasons. Now when we have several injuries and a retirement we're having to blood newbie's. That is necessary and will pay off in the longer term but we're going to be less consistent for a while.

Amazing how Derry/Rg were able to keep the same team week in week out during that time

The best 'post 93' player to have played for Derry

He's really got the bit between the teeth atm, work rate is seriously high the last two games. Superb player

We were blessed injury wise the two Ulster winning years and importantly, the players were 3/4 years younger then!
There was always a suspicion that the intensity of the RG training regime might not be great in the long-term for players, so maybe that's a factor in some of the more niggly style injuries.

We also had a different conditioning coach, now off in New Zealand. Perhaps his methods helped reduce the risk of injury.

Unfortunately couldnt get to the game or watch it, so I'm basing my assessment off the highlights.
The keeper seemed anonymous and I thought he could have done better for at least one of the last 2 goals. Threw himself at the feet of the forward way too early. I reckon Lynch saves some of those goals.
The highlights didnt really show what he did out the field so I'll reserve judgement on that.

Our 2 corner backs looked like they really struggled. We need to keep a sweeper in there or we're going to concede lots of goals. Maybe Chrissy would come back!

Glass lost his man for the first Kerry goal, but looked to have a really good game otherwise. We seemed to do better in the MF sector than we did against Tyrone.
Tohill seems to be getting the nod from Tally, heard his name mentioned on highlights but hard to tell from that how he did. Jury is out on him.
Ethan should probably have had 2 goals, but also looked to be playing really well despite that.

I wouldn't be too annoyed about the result provided the performance was there. Kerry looked to have a strong enough side out so to be able to compete, and feel like we should have won given we are also without quite a few key players is a good thing.

Looking at the other games, it's difficult to see where we'll get our points from. Mayo is a must win.
Galway will be a difficult day at the office I feel. Dublin are maybe beatable for us.
Armagh were really strong against Tyrone, but the breeze should not be underestimated in that game.
And Donegal will be a tough nut.
So we may get relegated, not the end of the world, so long as we are improving and building then maybe we can get a bit of championship run going.

Just my thoughts from the game.

McNicholl was an obvious upgrade on Lynch out the field, looked much more comfortable on the ball. He wasn't as good off the tee and was likely under instruction to go long on kickouts. Don't think he could have done much about the goals bar his error on the last one. Worth persevering with.

Mark Doherty isn't a corner back. Too far off his man and whilst comfortable in possession isn't a good enough defender to play there.

Baker fisted a score but struggled at times defending and kicked possession away needlessly.

McEvoy was a mixed bag. Needed to be stronger on the penultimate goal but did some good things too. Our entire defense is too susceptible to a back door cut.

Conor Doherty very good in possession but a little lax defensively at times. Still had a good game.

Rogers was very good for second game in a row. Strong runner, a leader in the team and can chip in with a score.

Gilmore a mixed bag too. Can run all day and got his couple scores but kicked away possession too and doesn't look as comfortable on the ball as others.

Glass was very good bar losing his man once or twice in the first half. Like Rogers can kick a score and is an obvious leader in the team.

Tohill did pretty well. Thought the ref was a touch sore on him as thought Kerry fouled him quite a bit on kickouts. Worked hard up and down and kicked a lovely pass inside.

Ethan was a mixed bag too. Hit a couple bad wides in the first half that county players should be scoring. Should also have passed to McGuigan who was clean through one of the times he kicked a goal chance over. Did get his couple scores and assist for the goal McGuigan got and ran hard at the defense as always.

Paul Cassidy took the wrong options on a couple occasions. Sometimes needs to just turn and shoot. Did kick a nice score or two. Played inside a lot and has the ability to make runs and win the ball inside which we struggled with against Tyrone. Worth looking at inside again.

McCarron did alright. Kicked a good two pointer and won a fair share of breaking ball. Almost keeps it too safe at times and nearly seems to lack the guile of a forward. Bounced the ball into tackle in first half when he should have just turned and kicked a point. Does look to have the physicality for county football unlike some of our other fringe players.

Toner was fairly good. Took his frees well and jinked inside to create scoring chances a couple times as well as chipping in himself from play.

McGuigan was good. Always making himself available and kicked a few lovely scores. Made that same run he got his goal from at least 4 or 5 times before he got his reward. A leader in the team.

Murphy was decent. Won a great ball in the corner when McGuigan either felt he was fouled or lost the ball in the sun. Has something different the other forwards.

Subs didn't offer a lot maybe bar Murray who took a score well but dropped another well short.

Think we need to look at options in full back line. Possibly McGrogan once he returns to be an option there along with McCluskey.

Noticed Kerry practicing the palm into the net a lot before the game and they looked for it at every opportunity whereas we didn't and possibly left a goal or two out there.

Think you are spot on here, Thought Ethan was really good and Toner worked his socks off. Paul Cassidy and Ben Mc Carron seem to wait for the perfect shooting opportunity before having a go. More freedom and more confidence in themselves will hopefully create more scoring chances.

Though we missed Mc Faul for last 10 were some experience can dictate the flow of a game. To leave Celtic Park absolutely sickened after Kerry robbed us with 4/5 starters missing shows we aren't totally in a bad place.

The best 'post 93' player to have played for Derry

That's a big statement.
I rate him very highly but think he is still a good bit behind Paddy Bradley , Enda Muldoon and fergal Doherty. Has time on his side though and definitely heading in that direction
