Mickey Harte had his eye on the O'Byrne Cup for Offaly.

That option would still include provincial championship series across the four provinces with the eight finalists, the top seven placed league counties after that, and the Tailteann Cup winners going into a 16-team draw.

Those eight ties would produce eight-team winners' and losers' paths.

I thought the All Ireland finals had replays or was that after the extra time be played.

EmeraldOpal

Apparently they want round robin to stay at least one more year.

Would Counties just arrange challenge games instead of mckenna cup type tournaments.

Are they chopping the pre-season competitions in order to start the league a week or two early so that there'll be a better break between championship games?

would make sense tbh. Mickey Harte won't like it though.

There was a 2025 master fixtures calendar approved yesterday if anyone can get sight of it.

Hopefully we find out the date of the London v Ros game in good time to get cheap fares.

No 3 in a row O'Byrne Cup for Longford so. Would have been a good way for the new Manager to start.

Fewer games, more jeopardy proposed for Sam Maguire

A new proposal to reduce the number of games in the Sam Maguire senior football championship and to eliminate teams who lose two matches post the provincial championships will now be on the agenda for Congress 2025.

If it is successfully voted through next February, it would be in place for the Championship of 2026.

The key change to the current structure would be the removal of one round of games and the addition of 'win or bust' for teams that lose their opening match.

After the provincial championships, the four provincial champions and the four provincial runners up would be drawn to play at Home against the next eight best seeded teams decided by their place at the end of the Allianz League – similar to the present system.

The eight winners from Round 1 would go into Round 2A. The eight losers would go to Round 2B.

The eight teams in Round 2A would play each other with the four winners going to the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals. The four losers would go to Round 3.

The four winners in Round 2B would also progress to Round 3 to play against the Round 2A losers for a place in the All Ireland Quarter finals. The four losers in Round 2B would exit the Championship.

Not much reward for Provincial winners over runners up!(other than getting the Provincial Cup of course).

Wonder will Rounds 2A/B and 3 be 1st out of bowl get home venue or neutral venues?

I wonder does this proposal remove automatic entry to the Sam Maguire for the Tailteann Cup winner, with entry based on the league positions and provincial championships only?
