GAA Discussion / Re: McKenna Cup 2007 Champions Tyrone

That point is the exact same point I made about 2 weeks ago after the Derry debacle.  They should not be dictating when its an Inter-County competition.  The players are from the county and wanted to play for their county.  If they werent interested in playing for their universities, why should they?

QuoteOverrated: C Mortimer, J Bergin, SM Lockhart,
Overrated unless they've a good 07: C Cooper, S McDonnell, C Whelan, B Cullen

SM Lockhart is always chatted in such high regards.  He may be a good man marker but his footballing ability is pretty average at best.  For over-rated unless good in 07, not so sure about Cooper, had a bad 2006(ppl can throw up stats to counter this claim, but his contribution from play was limited) but has been great since 2002.  Same with McDonnell, over-rated my hole.  The man is class.  Definitely agree with the 2 Dublin players, Cullen to the Dublin media is like Rooney/Gascoigne to the english.  Far too much hype and based on what?  As for Whelan, catches come good ball, but more frequently catches men with his elbow.  Looks far too heavy as well.

Enda McGinley and Joe Mc Mahon definitely are under-rated.  McMahon will come into his own as one of the best around eventually but McGinley gets little credit for his work.  Dooher is under-rated in the scale of things too.  His importance to the team in the role he plays is vast.  McCullagh is another who is a class act and is only now getting the chance to really show it(well due to soccer and injuries).

I think Kieran Donaghey is over-rated, he has been about a few years and did nothing then suddenly hit a purple patch(fair play to him), but I cant see him doing the same this year.

Mark Lynch from Derry is a prime case of a player showing the effects of burnout.  Since 2002 Minor All Ireland he has been play schools/club/county/uni football and hurling.  Through this we have not seen the best of him yet.  Big Geoffrey was definitely under-rated.  Scoring machine in either code.

Darragh O'Se is not maybe under-rated, but I think that the man doesnt get the praise that he deserves.  In the traditional mould of a midfielder, hes the best about and has been since Tohill went.  The best fielder of a ball in the country.

Agree with the Kevin Mc Gourty statement, decent club player and a basic at best county player.  Peter Donnelly from my own Tyrone - I dunno if you'd call him over-rated, as few actually rate him.  But hes been laying about the Tyrone panel for a while and to be honest hes clean useless.  Tomas Quinn of Dublin has to be there too, a free/penalty taker who regularly misses.

Uladh, your spouting of shite is nearly as annoying as a f**king cheeky girls song.  Wind your neck in, Tyrone took their punishment for the fielding of uni players in the Derry game, and we have moved on.  Point is, the uni's were no longer involved in the competition and if a player CHOOSES to make himself available to play for his County, who is Mickey Harte to stand in his way if the lad is good enough.

Great win and will be interesting to see the final panel.  Cavlan was brilliant and after his showing against monaghan on Tuesday it seems he is back to his best.  As for the criers on about college players, sry up.  The colleges are out of the competition and even so I still believe tyrone shouldnt have been docked 2 points after the derry game, but thats in the past.  At the end of the day all the players are from Tyrone, and those who are whinging should really concentrate their efforts on supporting their own county sides, a hint of jealousy at the talent coming though in Tyrone.  A great win in the McKenna cup final with a team that was missing a large number of its stars.  It bides well for the future!

Mc Cullough has been brilliant any time he has played this year, and in fact he has performed well any time he has played.  He should be a definite, whereas Peter Donnelly should be axed!

QuoteIf Dooher gets back to full swing then the battle between him and Mulgrew for the other wing half forward spot in the tyrone team should be interesting.(Though I'm sure more will be battling for it though my money would be between them two)

If dooher gets back into full swing, there will be no battle with anyone.  The man is guranteed his place through what he has offered, still offers and will continue to offer!

QuoteWe'll be there or thereabouts come tomorrow night NKAB. Things are going well.
My only slight concern would be that, like last year, we'll peak too early and will have a disappointing championship. I hope this isn't the case because with Tyrone, Armagh and Donegal on the other side of the draw I believe we have a genuine chance of getting to an Ulster Final. That would be a huge boost to our county.

Has your views changed?

Antrim / Re: Antrim Football Thread

I remember writing something about mcgourty a few months ago on this site, about kevin mcgourty being so over-rated.  He has never done anything in ana ntrim jersey and maybe has played a few good games for st galls in antrim but has never shone in ulster club.  He is somehow at about 25 still playing with queens, and maybe scored a point at most in their 3 mckenna cup games.

Out of interest, what 5 all irelands has he played in two years?

QuoteFormer captain Brian Dooher raised the roof at Kingspan/Breffni Park as Tyrone cruised their way into the McKenna Cup final with a facile 2-16 to 0-8 win over a poor Monaghan side

I thought Dooher was captain for this year again?

Some interesting points, especially about mcdonnell blowing kisses and enjoying the crowds reaction to his scores.  But do you blame him.  Being a Tyrone fan, theres many a day I would have loved to have mowed him down myself, but the man is quality.  If he complains about stick from 'certain' fans, then it must be bad enough so he's right to say so.  Im sure he doesnt  need reminding that he takes the wrong option, or hit a bad miss - all players know what they've done wrong in a match, and just really want the opportunity to rectify their errors, just as McDonnell did on sunday.  Its good craic with your marker trying to wind you up etc, but when 5 louth players do it it shows how much they feared him by trying to piss him off more, putting him off his game.  How it backfired, Im sure mcdonnell got great joy out of hammering the ball into the net to win the match for Armaghs 'B' Team.  I bet the Louth keeper wasnt slabbering as much then.  As someone posted, McDonnell has been playing flat out for past few years, mckenna cup, league and champ.  He definitely should have been rested for the mckenna, and I have no doubt that armaghs best forward will be back scoring for fun in the summer.
