General discussion / Re: Krakow
February 13, 2009, 04:37:07 PM

The Irish MBassy is a good bad just of the main square.  Would be a decent spot for watching the rugby if its on when you're there.  There are good clubs and places, many in undergrund cave like structures.  There are also plenty of spots to watch jazz if you're into that thinkl.  We were at a really good brewery, again underground, the first time I was there but I can't remember the name.

There is also a really good chocoloatiers on the main square (near the tower where the wee man comes out on the trombone) that does hot chocolate with various flavours and all sorts of fancy desserts.  IT will be a hit with the woman if you are breaking her.

Re. things to do. Auschwitz and the Salt Mines are the main things.  Auschwitz is harrowing but something every1 should go to.  IT was only 60 years ago it all happened after all.  Salt mines are easy to get to on the tram and relatively sheap.  Worth doing.  Think you walk down about a million steps to get down and then get squahed in a tiny elevator coming up. But sure its a bit of craic.  Wawel castle is in the town and worth a walk around, though as castles go its probably not the best.

Overall, Krakow is a great ciity and you'll have a good time.

Local GAA Discussion / Re: Fermanagh Football & Hurling

Paddy McGuinness was an excellent football and servant of Fermanagh football.  But Barry Owens is considered by many across the length and breadth of the country to be the best full back in the land.  The only time we ever had a player talked about in a similar breath was McGinnity.  As a result these two would have to be numbers one and two.

I doubt Phil Mack's delusional...that girl on Hills of Donegal is surely not from Donegal whilst the one on Rose of Clare is wearing sunglasses and a bit of a tan.  Blow ins to be sure!

My mate's XV and my response:

Fermanagh's best team of last 10-15 years

Christopher Breen

Paddy McGuinness

Barry Owens

Paul Courtney

Shane McDermott

Ryan McCluskey

Tommy McElroy

Paul Brewster

Martin McGrath

Shane King

Rory Gallagher

Mark Little

Raymond Gallagher

Stephen Maguire

Eamon Maguire

How the hell can you pick McDermott?! He's been one of Fermanagh's worst players in many games over the years - never reproduces his St Pats form.

Also, Tommy McElroy, a telling contribution over the last few years granted, but selection over Raymie Johnston? Arguably Fermanagh's most consistent performer over the last ten years?  That is akin to selecting Rafael at right back in a Man U XI over the last ten years ahead of Gary Neville!

Inspired by some of the threads on the main board, I had a discussion via email today with one of my friends regarding Fermanagh's best XV over the past 15 or 20 years.  I relay it here for comments/criticism:

McGuinness      Owens           Goan

Johnston        McCluskey       K Gallagher

        McGrath               Brewster

The rest

So i'm giving up the drink for lent.  Which effectively means i'm giving up guinness.  Now as a warm up/down I went cold turkey this weekend.  But when I went to my local bar to watch the Rugby I discovered it was £2.20 for a Pint of Pepsi.  Now in the same bar its £2.70 for a lovely pint of G (£2.50 in his January sale).  So I started to think of the merits of both to try to decide the lesser evil:

Cost:  Draw, Coke with a small advantage (cause after eight pints you dont buy rounds for random strangers)
Calories: Coke has more calories
Sugar: Coke is the clear winner
Alcohol: Guinness is guilty here

So I reckon both are bad on the wallet, guinness is bad on the liver whilst Coke is bad on the teeth.  But with Coke having a higher calorific content I reckon it must be slightly worse (Guinness doesn't give me hangovers).  What d'ya reckon - which is worse?

Courtesy of Mr Frankie Boyle:

"I was watching Jeremy Kyle the other day just thinking: where do they find these awful people?
Then it hit me - Glasgow."

"They're always going, don't deal with terrorists. Let's deal with them. What's Allah offering you boys, 100 virgins? We'll give you 50 slags."

"My plan is to re-criminalise homosexuality - so I can feel dirty when I do it ."

"Do you remember years ago, when they were making Braveheart, everyone said "Oh it's ridiculous, Mel Gibson playing a Scottish guy, that's not going to be very convincing..." and look at him now, an alcoholic racist"

"They say the Olympics is going to rekindle English national pride. I'm mean come on, for £9.2 billion you could've written "f**k Off Germany" onto the moon..."

"What's that Joker? You'll be back? You know somehow, I don't think you will be."

"I like storms, I like thunder and lightning. What I like to do during a storm, is shag my girlfriend and pretend that we're taking part in the conception of the Antichrist".

"Use the force, Luke. I've run out of lubricant."

"You're good at poker, Bond. But lets see how you do on the fruit machines."

"Well I put it to you Your Honour, that this child is sexy."

I understand that the Irish News is doing a feature about the top fifteen players to play for each County ever. Readers must vote for each County's Top 15.

The 30 players from each County with the most votes are then put forward for selection in the 125 greatest players from Ulster ever.

So who makes your county's top 15?  (There is a risk that this will get corrupted by myopic fans - although then again a Tyrone team that won three All-Irelands or an Armagh team that won seven Ulster titles in ten years warrants a fair representation).

For what its worth I had a stab at picking 15 Fermanagh stalwarts (some of whom are listed on reputation only as i'm too young to have seen them play!):

Peter McGinnity
Barry Owens
Martin McGrath
Tommy Durnien
Colin Curran
Rory Gallagher
Raymond Gallagher
PT Treacy
Mick Brewster
Paul Brewster
Tom Brewster
Ryan McCluskey
Stephen Maguire
JJ Treacy
Ciaran Campbell

That's three from the 1959 All Ireland Junior Football Championship winning team, two from the Ulster Finalists of 1982, four from the All Ireland B Championship side of 1996, five from the All ireland Semi Finalists of 2004 and Tommy Durnien, the first Fermanagh man to win a Railway Cup medal.

A pretty fair representation of the glory days of Fermanagh football

They have used the same format as ESPN on my other fantasy six nations but have restricted my country selection to 3 rather than 4...hmm
