GAA Discussion / Re: Underage Amalgamations
September 24, 2022, 09:11:32 PM
In Armagh amalgamated underage teams can play in whatever division they believe they are at. There are amalgamated teams at all levels. Amalgamated teams wouldn't normally be of the quality required to play Division 1, but it does happen now and again; eg Patrick Rankin (Shane O'Neill's, Corrinshigo O'Hanlon's, I think) are Division 1 at U17 this year

Interest rates up to 2.25%

Struggling to understand how upping the interest rates will bring down inflation which is currently being driven by lack of supply and corporate greed rather than too much demand.

Interest rate increases increase the amount paid on borrowings.  For companies this means that they might not go through with new borrowings, thus reducing growth prospects or reduces their profits as they pay more on debt repayments.  Ultimately this will lead to job losses which results in less money being spent on the high street and shops.
And people who do have jobs are paying more on their mortgages so that's another driver for reducing spent.

So it is pretty nasty (in human terms) but ultimately it's the lever that the central banks use to create "demand destruction", with the result that prices fall and inflation gets back "under control".

Of course, had they printed less money over the last 10 days they could have avoided this seemingly being the only solution open to the Powers That Be.

According to yesterday's Irish News Jamie Clarke couldn't play last weekend due to Cross having a "7 day rule", which presumably prevents you from being selected for Cross if you play another sport (?) within 7 days.
If that is the case I imagine won't be much chance of seeing him play for Cross this year given his is contracted on the soccer.  So you'd wonder why he was listed in the Cross squad that was given to Armagh County Board.  All very strange.

This is where I have got to in relation to my question.

A free kick is awarded after a mark and a free kick can only be taken immediately with the ref's consent (2.6), so I guess this is why the goal was disallowed; because the ref didn't signal that the free could be taken quickly.
It was probably harsh to hop the ball because if you took a free kick too quickly out the field after being fouled you would normally get to take it again, not lose the free kick.

So it was probably correct that the goal was disallowed.
I think its a mess. half the time the forward inmdicates the mark, he then plays on.  Raised hand and acknowledgement by ref stops play.. Can someone think of the defenders.

My take on it.. Ball is played in, attacker catches ball, I blow whistle (regardless) he can play on but must be allowed the time it takes 4 steps to be tackled. if he calls the mark he must take it within 15 seconds, I wouldn't be pulling players on taking the free too quickly, that would only be if its a 14 yard free, anywhere on the pitch, if I blow for a free, if he's ready to take it, providing no one is within 13 meters then play on...

Would need to have seen the actually play, the hop bal in my opinion would be if he didnt take it till after the 15 seconds had elapsed

EverY ref is different, we want to speed up the game and if we are always having to blow again for re starts and so on then it slows it down IMO

Well there would definitely have been defenders within 13m, but if that didn't hinder the attacking team then it probably shouldn't be brought back on that technicality.

Was at a game yesterday where a forward took a mark (he put his hand up).  He very quickly played a foot pass to his teammate who scored a goal.
The ref disallowed the goal and gave a hop ball, so I presume he must have decided that the player "played through" the mark after signalling that he was going to take it.

Was he right to disallow the score?

Even if you take a mark you can play a kickpass.  Surely the ref can't have said that the pass was taken too quickly?
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the pass didn't go 13m.  Does a pass after a mark have to go at least 13m?

Has anyone experience of satellite broadband. Currently looking at it but the data packages seem quite small. 150Gb max.

Go for Starlink. I have it about 6 months it and just got an email that sub price is being reduced to £75. I had no other options for decent internet.  It's great.

I heard that today and apparently the price of the hardware has dropped to under £500. What speeds are you getting? Would it be reliable enough at peak times and for working from home?

I get between 60 - 150MB d/l and15 - 25MB u/l speeds.  It's great for WFH during the day.

Rules are simple, you can't tackle unless you're tackling the ball, outside of a shoulder to shoulder physical contact is not allowed really (by rule book)

Shouldering not allowed in the rule book.
The way is is being refereed at all levels (I watch a lot of ladies football) is that the ball carrier tends to be penalised if they are travelling at pace and a defender who runs into their path collides with them and falls over. It is interpreted as charging , even when the ball carrier has both hands on the ball, and has clearly no interest in taking contact. Would have no issue when a player puts a hand out or leads with elbow. But that's often not the case. Meath had two given against them early in the game on Sunday. Donegal had a ludicrous one given against them in the last minute of semi final when going for what would have been the winning goal. Meath back ran in to the path of the Donegal forward, caused a collision , fell over and got a free out.

Yep, that rule is so frustrating. The very odd time you will see an inter-county ref blowing for a free against the defender because she is adjudged to have ran across to get in front of the ball carrier, but this happens on nearly every one of those "charging" incidents yet 9 times out of 10 it's a free to the defender.

I swore there was a girl in the junior game pulled for picking it off the ground.

You can't pick it off the ground if any part of your body, other than feet, are touching the ground.

Having had occasion to be on Northwood Drive over the last year I just cannot fathom how that child cycled down there naked without hundreds of sightings in the early part of a summer evening.

There must be close to 300 houses on the Drive all leading to an end cul-de-sac where he'd have had to force his way past the side of a house to gain access to that storm drain.

Dozens of kids / parents etc out in the street with the weather - there's nothing about it makes sense.

There's a house at the end of that street blurred out on Google Maps ... I wonder why?

So there is!

General discussion / Re: Cryptocurrency

It's pretty simple lads, Bitcoin is viewed as a risk-on asset by the market.  And with the current macro conditions all risk-on assets are getting destroyed.  Bitcoin is the currently the most volatile (to both the upside and downside) of the risk-on assets.
That's it, as far as Bitcoin is concerned.

Other crypto type stuff, including defi is a sharkpit with companies trying to make a profit wherever they can.  Bitcoin is different.
I'm holding on a little bit longer (I haven't been buying the dip just yet) and will certainly buy some more BTC at what I think are really low prices.  I think the economy will tank so much, just look at 2 and 10 year US Treasury rates today that the Fed will have to turn dovish in a little while and we'll be back to a risk-on environment.

EDIT - I'm not aftermining this now.  Look at what I posted here in May on this thread a few pages back: http://gaaboard.com/board/index.php?topic=28150.msg2122683#msg2122683

Constant booing of Donegal players by a lot of young Armagh fans. But if it gives them a free pass let's just say that none of them looked like they'd be driving home.
I had to move away from them as had my daughter with me and they let a flare off at the start of the game.

Bitcoin is very different to all the other "crypto" assets.
All of the other tokens (exc stable coins) are effectively commercial ventures that are supposedly decentralized by they are actually ran by a limited number of key people / validators.  I totally agree that a lot of the other crypto assets are just speculation assets, but I am content that Bitcoin is very different.

Bitcoin is truly decentralised and permissionless, none of the rest of the crypto assets can say that.  Eth is the next supposedly most decentralised asset but they effectively force validators to update the code / issuanace protocal as directed by the Ethereum Foundation due to the Eth difficulty Bomb.
