Antrim / Re: Antrim Football Thread

Noticed they've done the same for the hurling semis on Sunday, 1 and 5 at Dunsilly, id have went to this if was a double header 2 and 4 or something, clearly trying to get the ££££££ up make sure everyone cleared out before the 2nd game. id say even if it was £12 for a double header lot of people would have took in both games.

If we take the infamous Conor McManus/Sean Cavanagh incident, the same will happen now regardless of the black card?  I always felt it would be beneficial to allow the fouled player to still be allowed to fist pass the ball, with no restriction on distance.  Obviously there will be an outcry at the reduction of the sacred kickpass, but it could be restricted to frees inside attacking 21.  Any further interference with the player results in a penalty.  Conor McManus could conceivably have got up and laid the ball off to an incoming player and still had a goal chance.  The same goes for a mark too, why not allow a player to lay off to an in rushing player even if they have called the mark?  Is a kicked 15 yard free really that precious?

Also why do we not allow quick frees from the 13?  What purpose does that serve other than to benefit someone who has committed a foul?  I don't see why we should be giving the defence time to get back to the line, that is merely an incentive to foul.  Drop that rule altogether imo.

When did this become a thing? ref blows whistle, he doesn't need to blow it again and if players are back 13 meters from kick then whats the problem with taking a 'quick' free if these are met?

It's always been a thing;

2.6 With the Referee's consent, a free kick may be taken immediately.
  Exceptions:
A penalty kick and a free kick awarded to a team from their opponents' 13m line.

I never did, in fairness most teams defence will crowd round and restrict that from happening.. Though I can see what this means, all players must be 13 meters away from play, as I said in my post above if all players are 13 meters away there is no reason to stop it being played (in my view I'm right lol)

I'd given a free last night on the D one lad gave a bit of verbal's and I brought the ball forward the player had a free shot on goal as he was taking it quick, missed an open net!!

The 13m away from a free is pretty much ignored everywhere else on the field.  The obvious example, and one which occurs repeatedly in every game, is a player fouled who takes the free immediately.  That is never pulled back to allow the fouler to retreat sufficient distance (thankfully!)  In the instance of a 13M free, it isn't really a factor because the referee just waits for everyone to get back on the line (which essentially delivers the ruling of "no quick free.")  Why give the defensive team control over that scenario in this way?  It promotes fouling.  It promotes players crowding around the freetaker (which incidentally should be penalised.)  If a player can take a quick 13M free, and the outcome for obstructing that is a penalty, would it not help discourage the foul in the first place?

With your scenario above, a quick free was entirely fine unless you brought it up to the 13M line, in which case he must have gave you a right good mouthful because that's over 20M  ;D

Remember the ref decides what 13 meters is and how long 5 seconds are lol

The 5 sec rule needs to go as well in my opinion, should be like soccer and just if the play continues then that's it. Most frustrating thing in football player fouled the ref has the hand up the player slips the ball on to a team mate who then 2 secs later blazes it wide or defender makes a cracking tackle and it's pulled back for a foul. So frustrating. If the player fouled completes a pass to a team mate then the advantage should be over.

Believe it or not the best boots about are mizuno, the leather is very good and they are well put together, pricey though and hard to get a black pair but they are worth the money as the last ages

Have turned off 5live recently as its non stop doom and gloom, its as if they can find the most extreme view on the predictions they can find and run with it..

Few things, we can all do without a few things but not prepared to do without because its norm

Phones, data, takeaway's, treats, going to the pub, getting over priced coffee, brand labeled food, starters, non essential journeys or driving to local shop, holidays, turning the thermostat down, netflix and the rest, replica football tops (never had one)

I'm sure there is a hell of a lot more crap we could cut out and be a lot more healthier for it, but are you will to do without?

Some of the above might even bring down costs from the energy providers if we didn't use so much

This 100% there is no sacrifices being made in a lot of situations, not all but some. Me and the mrs would prob be considered middle of the road both work 5/6 days a week have a mortgage both have a car (one paid off one on finance) we've seen our bills sky rocket we've sat down and done a list of what we can and can't do without, take away coffees and making a lunch every day was something you wouldn't think too much about but I'd say between us it's over £100 a week cut, we also used to go for something to eat every Sunday either breakfast or lunch cut that back to once a month sometimes twice another £60/70saved. That's just on things we did food wise.
Simple things like shopping in Lidl for most of our stuff.

didn't upgrade her phone just got a PAYG sim cut another £50 a month. Gonna keep my car and not change it when it's paid off in 6 months be another 300 a month

It's about making cuts where you can, nobody's saying don't go on holiday etc, the small things are the 1s that add up i was shocked how much I was spending every day just grabbing coffee and lunch etc, make a lunch now and honestly makes no difference to me and it's saving me a fortune.

Kilkenny are very strong at senior, intermediate and the junior grades in the All-Ireland series.

They are all evenly balanced, all strong.

A team could come up from intermediate and give the senior club championship a rattle, at worst, they are really competitive.

Other counties are nowhere as evenly structured.

Is this your own opinion or have you a link or stat to back that up?

Was in Galway few years ago and St Thomas's were not a senior team, funny enough after winning minor championships and gaining senior they won club all Irelands. Sometimes teams come along from lower grades and play well. Sometimes you have an exceptional player who is from a junior grade club who is county standard..

Well, funny you should ask that:

KK clubs have won 10 junior All-Irelands, 7 Intermediate All-Irelands and 6 senior* club All-Irelands.

* only went back to 2005 with the senior clubs.  KK clubs were runners up 4 junior All-Ireland finals and 3 intermediate club finals.

Now, onto my point about their system and how competitive they are.

St. Pat's Ballyragget won a Junior KK club title in 1978 and the next year, 1979, they won a KK Intermediate title.

More recently, in 2013, Clara won a KK Intermediate (2012) and All-Ireland title and in 2013, they got up to senior and won the senior KK club championship. They won it again 2 years later in 2015. Not a bad achievement!

One more example - In 2015, Bennetsbridge won the Junior All-Ireland club title. Later that year, they won the KK Intermediate title on they way to going on to win the All-Ireland club title in early 2016. Again, not bad at all.

As I say, a  well structured  competitive competition.

I wasn't arguing your point on teams in Kilkenny, your original point was junior clubs having senior county standard players.. it happens, my point was that junior teams from Limerick Waterford (the Benntts team) Kilkenny and so on are of a much higher grade to Antrims junior teams and as such will occasionally produce a top player, and for us to get a player from let's say Ardoyne ( no offence to Ardoyne btw) to be a regular on the Antrim senior hurling is going to be very very rare

You could bring the former Antrim captain who's been lining out for Ardoyne this year back into the fold :p

Your point stands though, junior clubs in ulster hurling isn't usually their first sport so don't spend anywhere near as much time with a hurl in hand as players from junior clubs in the big counties, I'd say it's the same in football, you're more likely to get a county player playing JFC in a Kerry or Tyrone rather than an Antrim where the drop off in standard is massive

Stop keepers coming up to take frees and 45s kills about 2 mins at a time.

The Forward mark has to go, look at the Armagh goal at the start on Sunday. So many forwards would now just fire the hand up and take a point. It's a cop out and safe option. The Kildare forwards didn't use it a good few times on sat as well, refreshing to see proper corner forward play again

Kildare forwards showing what corner forward play used to be before the forward mark, they're playing on and it's refreshing to see instead of firing the arm ip

These wides will be our downfall come the end... I've counted 5 poor misses

We're playing well here, Cork look like they believed the media disregard for us and Kerry during the week and come up here to go through the motions, hard to step it up when that creeps in. I think we can do it here, that score at half time to go in in front will be massive boost for us, please please no repeat of last weeks 2nd half

Said it before here, the main tweak needed is the cant play the ball back after you cross the halfway line means teams can actually press without a team just knocking it back 40 yards. we had no score in the first 10 mins of the Ulster final, so much of that was no pressure put on the ball and spraying backwards passes It was honestly the worst 10 mins of GAA ive ever watched, id rather watch my son at the go games.

Black card or no??

The inconsistency of the black cars is so frustrating, just do away with it. If that's not a black card then there's zero point

this article pretty much nails it. great to see a player being realistic. What is the point in busting your arse training when you know you're going out to just try and avoid being embarrassed. As Quinn says here the Tailteann is a comp where teams can go out and set realistic targets and try to build something.

id much rather see Antrim compete in semi finals/ finals of the Tailteann than maybe win a round or 2 in qualifiers then see us play one of the top counties put 15 behind the ball in a game of keep the score respectable. Far rather see us go for a trophy we could win and go for it trying to play football and build

Donegal showing there the reason we need something like basketball when ya get in to the opponents half you can't go back, so bad to watch them turn and actually run back towards their own goals
