Mellon cleared for inter-county games
Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:46
Tyrone attacker Ryan Mellon has been cleared to play in the Ulster SFC semi-final against Donegal on Sunday week.

Mellon has been handed a four week suspension following his straight red card dismissal in a club game 10 days ago.

But the ban is restricted to club football, and does not apply to the inter-county game.

He was sent off in the second half of Moy's Tyrone SFC defeat to Kildress.

Gerard Cavlan also received a straight red card while playing in the SFC for Dungannon against Killyclogher last Sunday.

His case is to be dealt with by the county's disciplinary committee this week.

Watch the whingers begin their sad stories of Tyrone suspensions.
Is a month the norm for striking?

Thats not what I heard this morning on 98fm Dublin station.
They said the Dublin v Meath replay is unlikely to be on TV as RTE have already commited themselves to the Tyrone match and Munster hurling game.

Thought it was crazy when I read on Sunday morning on Aertel Micky Harte saying Tyrone will be back to Full strength except for Brian McGuigan.
I thought what about Mellon suspension and now we've got Cavlan's suspension and now also Tommy McGuigan and Niall Gormely out injured after the weekend matchs.

I was surprised to read the county men had all played for their clubs in league games at the weekend but yet again there was loads of incidents all around the county.
Can you blame some county players taking the hump over lining out for their clubs?

Why has it taken so long for Mellon to get his suspension sorted out and surely Cavlan will be out for the Tyrone match or is the new rule that unless you get a month or more then you can still play for your county?

Is everyone else fit then for Sunday week?
I hear its on at 2.15 on RTE most likely in Clones. What's the delay in announcing this?

Will be interesting to see does Harte bring in Gourley, Holmes or the McMahon Bros this time?
Is Penrose back fit again? Reckon you'll see McCullagh on for his free taking.

Would like to see a regular free taker from each side as opposed the Fermanagh match mixup where everybody was having a pot. Even Mellon.

Oh I remember 2003 very well and was thinking after the Fermanagh match isn't it funny how many teams who go on to win the AI have poor 1st and 2nd round matches.

How many times have you left a ground after round 1 hearing some aul whinger saying
"Ach it dennae matter who won that as neiler will go muuch farther anyway"

Even back in 1986 when we scraped past Derry in Omagh 1st round I heard that said. I was only 13 mind.

I've a feelin this Donegal v Tyrone game is gonna be a cracker. We feel as if we owe them for the league defeat and losing 2 years ago and they feel they owe us as we stole the Mckenna cup off them again.

I agree with Maximus in that the DRA have done a real Pontius Pilate and agreed with the technicality but by throwing it back to the county board now means sort it out yourself as the public eye watches on.

Cos if they let him off altogether it looks really bad that you can raise your hand to a ref but as long as its Not too bad of a slap then you can get off.

Derry and Paddy himelf must be thinking is it better to take the punishment now against Antrim and maybe Monaghan/Down and be back for the tougher games or risk it and play 20 mins v antrim where he will hardly be needed.

If ye cannae beat Antrim without him ye really are a wan man team.

I think he should sit it out and let the dust settle.
Should we beat Donegal I'd say PB will be well up for a big performance v Ricey in the Ulster final should ye get there

I would presume its definetely in Clones abd would expect ONLY the Gerry Arthur Stand to be all ticket

Don't think there's any fresh injury worries since last week's championship games despite the Moy getting quite a brusing evening.

Does anyone have any info from recent training sessions? How's flying and who's dying?
Will young Gormley and Tommy hold onto their places and will Mellon be dropped or suspended?

Its all very quiet of late. Just trying to think when did we won Ulster before 2003 and who did we beat?

Lads lads lads are ye taking the piss.
Of course you can train but just can't line out on match day for your club or/and county.

Paddy said on BBC interview that he was taking a few weeks off training with the county scene as he wanted to spend a few weekends away on holiday down south as he rarely gets the chance in the last 10 years.
He said he continues to train with the club and will be in good shape to play on Sunday should be needed but does not expect to start.
Crozier, the Derry boss, said it will be tough not to play him from the start, especially as his brother Eoin is still in a huff and won't come back to the squad.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just reporting what he said.

I'd say he is well pissed off with the Derry board and maybe also with a lot of fans.
Didn't he get a punch or two last year in a night club on the night after Longford beat them.
Lots of his fans and maybe even teammates think he's a greedy shite who never passes but they've a better chance of winning when he's on the team. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
To me he sounds a lost soul with the world on his shoulders with the whole lack of all-star, International rules snub, county board and Refs out to get him and even his own fans on his back the odd time. No wonder he often heads off to the US to get away from it all.

Still, I wish he would move across the border to Tyrone though.  ::)

I noticed Mugsy had his leg strapped at the weekend?

Has he a injury still?
How is he training? Is he labouring or about to up the ante now soon.

Is Penfold back in the running again?

Liffords pitch is just off this Roughan Road down left from the diamond.

See Paddy Bradley got off. Logan does the bizz again. Unbelieveable

Anyway can we get back to the Tyrone v Donegal game.
I wasnt at this game the last time when McFadden was on fire.
Will it be another close defensive game or will Tyrone open up and play ball.

I'd like to see McMahon FB, Block CHB, Hub & Sean MF, Cavlan back on the 40 with SON FF.
Maybe Dooher and McGuigan two wing backs and Mugsy and Enda in the Corners.
With that team U can't say we'll be outmuscled anyway.

When does Mellon get his suspension?

he got entangled with the referee after the official announced the incorrect result.

What does this mean Mr Heaney?
Was the Ref a octopus that couldn't decide who won the match?

What's the bets somebody picks up another injury over the next 3 weeks?

Does anyone actually know what's the story with Joey now?
Is he just not match fit or like Mugsy a bit heavy on it.

Is there any more time frame on Brian's eye?
Has he any vision in it now at all?

Just think Ricey is getting too carried away with all the hype about himself and like to many others is into his white or red boots and playing the fool rather than focusing on the job in hand.

How many times does he have to keep doing really silly fouls and kicks at someone without getting properly punished.
Felt last night on TV they were implying that some refs may not punish a player now so that they can be taken up on TV evidence and punshed properly.
I'd say the DRA or whoever would love to get a chance to put one over on Ricey or Tyrone in general as we've shown them up too many times now.

As a neutral kinda supporting Donegal I thought it was a crap game to watch but as Tohill said it had huge intensity. Big Deal. Horrible to watch.

I was shocked how McIvor hadn't told Donegal to release the ball much faster even when playing into the wind but maybe he thought they could draw frees from the usual over robust Armagh defenders.  I got very frustrated watching Doengal continually carrying the ball into 3 man tackles and spilling it again and again. I know it was very windy but surely quick low passes into space can overcome this if your forwards are making good runs.

I can see why some people compare Armagh to Chelsea as they strangle ever game they play and unfortunately my native Tyrone have dispensed with some of their attacking flare for this more negative football with getting more bodies behind the ball all the time.
I think that's why we rarely see high scores now in Ulster football and is it now time to change tact and go for more route one football again.
We want goals and points from all angles. Fast passage of passing play and not play on the break. In fairness watching other province football is a lot easier on the eye.

I hope the Donegal v Tyrone match is very open and that there is little swarming or double marking. I'd rather it was 3.13 to 2-16 draw than 0-07 to 0-06 win.
Thought the best point yesterday was scored by Marsden as Armagh won the throw-in and within 2/3 quick passes it was over the bar.

I hate to agree with the Southern softies and especially W*nker Spillane but I'm getting a bit tired of these defensive battles and swarm tackling.
Yes it's great when your defenders stays disciplined and get the attacker blown up for two long but as they said on the Sunday game last nite most Refs can't decide any more is it overcarrying or one on the line tackle too much.

Thought McDonnell was well held yesterday but was that cos poor ball going into him? Meath or Mayo for the qualiifers?
