GAA Discussion / Donaghy's "tackle" on Ryan
August 28, 2007, 11:55:58 PM
This has been briefly touched upon in a couple of other topics but I kinda felt it deserved a topic of it's own - however if the general feeling is that it doesn't I'll be happy for it to be merged.....

With 10-12 odd minutes left in the Dublin v Kerry game on Sunday and Dublin having gotten the last 3 scores, Shane Ryan was through on goal and was taken down by Kieran Donaghy in one of the crudest tackles (especially when you consider the positioning of it) I have seen in Croke Park for a long long time.

Had he scored the goal, who knows what would have happened; as it stood Dublin got their point and we all know how it finished out.....

The incident was barely discussed either after the game or that evening by the RTE "experts". I am quite sure if it had been Whelan (not my fav Dub by a long shot) or say Francie who made the same tackle on Gooch/MFR, I have no doubt that O'Rourke, Spillane & Co would have been up in arms over cynicism ruining the game, puke football etc etc.........And they would have been right.....

As it was, Donaghy got a yellow card when I feel that a red would have been more suited and it was brushed under the carpet by the RTE analysts.

There were of course other incidents in the game that were uncalled for but none had the same impact on the game as this one.......

A few good points there Rosnarun but your main thrust seems to be that JOM should not be manager of Mayo Senior football team.

Well them who should we have??

You appear to belittle JOM's achievements of winning the AI in '98 and '01? In that case we are left with just 4 candidates suitable for the job..............Paudie, Joe, Mickey H and P O'C..........two of those are retired and the other two are atill working.................whats' your suggestion?? Very few here agreed with M & M's shafting but ther's no point complaining about it......................however if you have our saviour wrapped in html over there, please let us know..................

For what it's worth, I believe JOM made some massive mistakes this season..................that said, he is still the best man to be at the helm next year.................keep the faith....................

Mayo / Re: Mayo Club Football.

is that on saturday or sunday Farrandeelin??

Crucial game between Knockmore and Breaffy. The loser is more or less out of the championship. Hopefully we'll make home advantage count.

well done Derry, if none of the Connacht teams do it, I hope ye go all the way.

Listened to it on the radio. By the sounds of it Howley and Cunniffe were big positives as was Hanley. Will be some casulaties before nexy year but def think that O'Neill, McD and Heaney have a lot to offer anyway.

Sounded like SML was savage, What a legend, as good as pony??

Mayo / Re: Our Full Back Problem

Would have liked to see P Navin given more of a shot maybe.

Definitely need more agression at the back, for me Gardiner has to go - inability to defend and for all his good running, he's not agressive enough.

Savage win for Sligo.

Fair play to ye lads..............

Hope they get off the beer before the Q/F though.

Mayo / Re: Mayo Club Football.

I would imagine Charlestown/Ballina have the longest on account of having being around the longest.

Knockmore have been senior since they won the Intermediate in '71 - won county and connacht senior the next year...........

Great to hear McG is back.......Could well struggle this year though so wouldn't expect a huge amount from him.

Quotemabye K O Neill are just not up to it really anymore.

Only 9 months ago people were moaning about why was he taken off in the AIF and now he's finished..........Not certain if he's worth a starting spot but well worth his place on the panel. With ball in hand he's by far and away our ball-playing forward (after McD obviously).

I'd say there'll be 3-4 changes to personnel and aother 3-4 positional changes.

Luckily we're at home and Cavan seem to be at a real low point. We aren't great either but hopefully we can win by a couple and I'd like to see us drawn against Armagh/Donegal in the next round to see if we're any good - if not, we might as well be out before reaching Croker.,,,,,,,,,

Quoteyeah Mc should have been dropped after that Low percentage shot againt dublin last year what was he thinking.
though its sounds like dempsey is the type of manager some mayo people are shouting for, a dour characterless team who take no chances and drag us doen to Ulsters level

You're reading a good bit between the lines there rosnarun. For what it's worth I don't think he'd be a great mayo manager yet at any rate, he needs more experience but i would have no problem being dragged down to ulster's level if that involves winning things instead of being 2nd place all the time.

Don't think GB would make a good CHB and to a lesser extent i don't think T Mort will make a good wing back. We need defenders at the back and forwards up front. I would imagine Heaney/Cunniffe/AN Other would be favourite. Where does Cunniffe play for Castlebar? What about S Ryder??

Why is Harte dropped from that team?? Thought he had a great year last year and seems to be doing well for Ballina. Maybe not as a wing forward but i'd prefer him to GB on the 40.

Only 4 days till the draw now..............

QuoteDidn't Brady play there at underage?
No, don't think so.

Would like to see another two players who can't defend in the half back line. Time to get defenders at the back instead of just good footballers.

kn**ker, should be banned for life.

QuoteAnd life ban meaning no entry to any GAA events, stadia etc for life.

That could be difficult to enforce.
