J70, whilst taking your point in general terms, I think your posts here are highly insensitive to the point of suggesting that you remove them. These families are suffering enough at the huge losses they have had to endure and your comments are far from helpful if any friend or family is reading this.

My sincerest sympathies to family and friends of all involved.

I suppose you think your "Mayo 3-18 Roscommon 0-7, Just another day at the office" is the height of witticism Godhelpus ? >:(.

Just to deflect your disappointment and to cheer you up Rosstan

I'm surprised no one mentioned Dermot Early on this thread.

Why? He may have been born in Mayo - was it Lahardaun/ Bofeenaun/ Islandeady country? He played all his stuff in Ros. If you start claiming him Muppet the Rossies will start some row and ruin this thread.

During his younger years he lived for a short while outside Balla.

Was with Arsenal Youths but injury wrecked him.

He'd get a right laugh out of that  :D Arsenal youths me arse ! As for injury finishing his career  :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'll hold my hands up if I'm wrong but I'd nearly swear to it! Maybe it was just a trial?? A great man for porter so that played a part but he finished up in his mid 20s. I think his knee gave in.

Mayo youths got to the national final the year he was banging in the goals, I recall him saying that there was an Arsenal scout at that final. That's as far as it went. He was an out and out goal scorer.
He got a knee injury playing for Manulla alright that kept him out for months. Porter ? The man just sips bottles of pop now.

:D :D ya pulled me up on everthing the fear , he must have been telling us a few white lies when he told us he was runninh the pub then ;) also most of the lads from cross if you mentioned zuby (spl) would know you were talking about ronan and as i said a sound fella maybe i am doing him a dissevrvice but i don't think imo he was one of the best the best footballers ever to come out of the county . what age did he leave for america at ?

History dictates that he's not one of the greats but is another example of a lad with savage talent not fulfilling on his undoubted ability, for whatever reason that may be ! He gets an honourable mention in The House of Pain, Maughan did everything possible to keep him in the county setup when his interest was waning. He would of been mid 20s when he went stateside.
That 1991 minor team had some cracking players on it, Ronan, Kevin O'Neill, David Burke, Kenneth Mortimer, your clubmate Heffernan in goals etc. Took a very good Cork team to beat them. If anybody can get a link of Golding's All Ireland minor final goal it would be great. He came on in the 1993 semifinal drubbling vs Cork when the game was lost, not the place for him.

Guys, my knowledge of Mayo football is fairly limited. I used to play a bit of football in the states about 10 years ago and there was a guy playing over there with myself called Ronan Golding. All of the Mayo guys out there would have told me that he was possibly the best footballer to ever come from the county, but quit playing too early for whatever reason. -Something similar to John Corvan and Armagh. I was wondering how the Mayo posters here rated him as a player?

ah ronan goulding or zuby as he was also known captained the mayo under 21 in 1994 or 1995 . he was a handy enough player but imo definately not one of the best to come from the county. He used to play with Balla, a decent skin ran a pub in balla for a while before emigrating

Zuby ???? Known as the Goose to all and sundry, captained the Mayo minors to an All-Ireland minor final in 1991 scoring one of the best goals seen there for manys a year in the process. To call him handy enough is doing the man a huge disservice, had nearly everything as a footballer, speed, strength and accuracy. Had the ability to win a match in a 5 minute spell.

He worked in the Shebeen pub in Balla alright, didn't run it though. Just a few pointys of order there Deel !!  ;)

They won All-Ireland Junior in 2004. Don't think they progressed in Intermediate.

They came from Junior in 2003 to be Meath Senior champions in 2006.

That's impressive. Am I right that it's a very rural Irish speaking community outside Navan? I think I was in it many years ago.
Thats correct Zap.  The Meath Gaeltacht is the smallest Gaeltacht area in the country and consists of two adjacent villages of Rath Cairn and Baile Ghib.

Wolfe Tones take in Baile Ghib which is about 4 miles north of Navan, Rath Cairn play with Clann na nGael which is an amalgamation of their Gaeltacht club with nearby Athboy. Graham Geraghty joined Clann na nGael from his original club Seneschalstown. Rath Cairn and Baile Ghib would be 10miles apart as the crow flies.

Michael Macauley is a 1st cousin of my wife's and I know his dad well but I've yet to see him play.
He plays MF I believe and I think he was on the Dublin squad at one stage or maybe it was only the U-21s

If I can get time I might go along on Sunday to see them play.
Have yet to see a Dublin club game so why not the biggy this weekend.

Why do Dublin play their club games in midweek?
Back in Tyrone Sunday is a big family day out for the GAA club members but it doesn't seem to be like that down here.

Was impressed by MacAuley on tuesday night, good pair of hands and well able to play football too. Scored an excellent point in the second half that helped to claw back at the Crokes big lead. Maybe not the tallest centrefielder but looks a strong player, on the 2 games I saw he was the standout midfielder and seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Who the favourites for the junior?

I ve a sneaking for Ardnaree.

Fancied them all along and I ll be seriously rooting for them. I ll even darken the door of McHale Park for this one. Cant believe the interview the Kiltimagh manager gave above. Something tells me he has nt done his homework and is going with some fanciful notion of where his club should be in the scheme of things. Whatever about his team this guy deserves a bit of grief.

Went to school with Mick (Micheál way back then) and I can vouch for him being a sound bloke. I'd say his lack of experience dealing with the media is glaring in that interview, not a very well thought out piece. Hope his words don't come back to haunt him !

Could one of you Galway lads tell me which club Kenny Naughton, who now plays with Ballyboden St Endas in Dublin, used to play with in Galway ? Played for Galway in the 2001 national league final against Mayo.

QuoteIn 2001 the Galway team in the FBD final was: Martin McNamara; Michael Comer, Jason Killeen, Micheal O'Collerain; Ray Silke, John Divilly, Sean de Paor (0-1); Sean O'Domhnaill, Michael Donnellan; Kenny Naughton, Shay Walsh (0-3) Lorcan O'Collerain, Derek Savage (1-2), Kieran Comer, John Donnellan (0-5). Subs: Padraig Lally for McNamara, Tommie Joyce for Divilly, Matthew Clancy for Naughton

Who won?

Ballyboden St Endas 0-19   Kilmacud Crokes 1-12

Dublin SFC Final  on this Sunday I think
Ballyboden St Endas vs St Judes

All 4 semifinal teams from the southside, so much for the northside football strongholds !

Year caught up with Crokes. They were 5 up with 20 to go in normal time but the legs ran out of them. Boden v Judes in the final on sunday. Nice to see 2 new teams in the final. Don't think Crokes will be too gutted- looked knackered at the end.

Were up by 6 at that stage, 1-7 to 0-4. Fair play to Ballyboden, to win by 4 was a 10 point swing. Feel taking off Ray Cosgrove after getting a yellow card was a mistake as he was showing very well and had 1-2 scored. His goal being one of the strangest finishes I've seen. Lobbed the ball into the top right hand corner from 6/7 yards out. He was fuming when subbed and wasn't slow in telling the Crokes manager his feelings either. A very entertaining match.
