GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh Vs Down
March 25, 2007, 06:58:03 PM
Thought it was a good game of football. Nice weather, good conditions and a good open match. As per usual, we were over reliant on McDonnell but I suppose at this stage its simply the way things are going to be. If he gets injured we're in serious trouble. That point built from the full back line and finished by McDonnell early in the 2nd half was superb. Some other nice points, espicially one from McGrane (I think) in the first half. Certainly there's still a few problems there for Armagh, the marking was very slack early on. Moriarty didn't have a great game and Marty O'Rourke took some very poor options in the second half. Marsden seems well of the pace at the minute but I suppose that's to be expected. Hopefully he'll be flying in a couple of months.

Still, great to get the win, if we can get results in Laois and Westmeath (tough prospect I know) we should have a great shout of making division 1 although 2 defeats and its probably going to be division 3.

What a weekend! Its tough on the Poly but I suppose that's sport. No team can have deserved to win a trophy more than this Queens side. If the result had gone the wrong way some of those lads would have lost 4 finals in a row. After all the disappointments to win the trophy on our own patch against Jtown is very sweet. Thought Aidan Carr had a good game but as usual with Queens, it was more about a team punching above their weight than individual brilliance.

QuoteIs there any reason to think that QUB can get over the line this year when they haven't been able to manage it in the previous 3? It's virtually the same players i see without brian mallon and eoin mccartan?

An extra year bigger and stronger Uladh? Home advantage? Being spurred on by having lost 3 finals in a row? In fairness they got to the final last year without Brian Mallon though he was probably the added spark they missed last year. QUB have a decent chance, they have nothing to fear from anybody left but its a very open competition.

Cloc, Dan McCartan is a registered student at QUB.

QuoteWhat do you suggest as a replacement?

Near enough anything. Danny Boy for one. At least it has a bit of history to it. Or maybe something by Dana? All kinds of everything?

Lads its QUB hosting the tournament. Its hardly unreasonable that they wish to host the entire thing at their grounds (which I've no doubt will be perfectly capable with a 1000 seater stand) rather than at another stadium the other side of the city. Should be a great weekend!

Armagh / Re: Armagh Club football & hurling

Pint I've already said I wasn't at the match and so I can't comment on specifics. I've made that dead clear from the start. I'm simply going on a second hand and fairly vague account but I've never claimed anything else. I really don't want to be drawn into a long and fairly pointless arguement on the subject, I simply took issue with the allegation that St Pats deliberately tried to have a game abandoned as I find this very very difficult to believe.

QuoteWell tacadoir! 6 months later and you break your silence.  I don't think anyone claimed the bridge were, or are, angels but tells us what they done that day that compared to cullyhanna's behaviour?  And as for biased accounts of me and six inch nail, tell you what, can you point to anything we've said that's incorrect?  Go and point it out.
As for your comment on the conspiracy, well it's just shows how much you know, why don't you ask Mal mackin was he sent out to do what he done?  You could also speak to some of the other players who's comments to each other, before the row, was overheard by our players.

Pint, my "silence" as you put it has been due to the fact that I (a) wasn't at the match and (b) my posting on the board has been severly restricted since the start of the summer for a number of reason (my total posts figure would bear this out)

Your asking what you've said that was incorrect, well you've always quite vehemently put forward the view that what happened at the c'ship match was entirely the fault of St Pat's men (and I'm not particularly fond of being labelled a c***). Now the limited accounts I've heard of the match suggest that CUllyhanna were not the only team at fault for what happened. Now I wasn't at the match and didn't see what happened, so, as I admitted, I don't have first-hand knowledge of what happened. I find it extermely hard to believe that any of the St Pats players would deliberatly try to have a match abandoned but I'm going to be dragged into a pointless arguement since I wasn't there.

QuoteAs I said at the start, apparently there was some signal to get the row started.

As far as conspiracy bullshit goes, that remark takes a lot of beating. I wasn't at the match so I won't comment but the reports I heard at the time (biased I'll admit but no mroe so than the bridge boys on here) were that Silverbridge were far from blameless angels.

Quote£20 million for Hargreaves, just after £20 mill on Carrick.

Ferdinand, and Ronney thats almost another £60 million. Van Der Sar, Ronaldo, Saha.

Geez lads I hope you aren't trying to buy the league?

There's a subtle difference - United have a lot of money to spend on players because they are a genuinely big club. Always have been and always will be. When Abramovich gets sick of throwing his dodgy money around on his latest toy Chelsea will head back to mediocrity they came from.

A point for United today and its a fantastic position. I've ben thinking for months that United will have to go to Stamford Bridge and get a point, if Chelsea don't drastically imrpove, we won't even need a point.

Miserable enough day and a miserable game. Was a bit disappointed in Armagh, St mary's were down to 14 men for most of the game and Armagh should have been a bit more clinical in putting them away. St Mary's were fairly limited. Thought Andy Mallon had a decent game and Paudie McCreesh was solid on his debut. In the forwards Stevie was quiet enough but still showed most of the limited quality on show. Got two good second half points. Swift was decent. I think we'll struggle in the forwards this year without Clarke and Brian Mallon, Stevie McDonnell might have to shoulder most of the burden of getting scores.

On another point, did anybody else think that charging £7stg was sticking the hand in a bit?

QuoteHis only contribution to the game was to clap as ONeill was shown the red card

Imagine. Shockin behaviour altogether. Be even worse if he done it in a big game. Say like an All Ireland final?

Funny enough I've taken to looking at foot.ie at lot at me lunchtimes (Gaaboard is blocked off at work). Its a decent site and the lads are very passionate about their sport. I've a lot of time for the Eircom League, went to a few Derry games this season and had a great time so will probably become a more regular activity. But the only thing that really gets to me about that site is the constant hatred directed to GAA. Utterly small minds for many of them.

A real decisive week it looks like. Chelsea got back to within 2 points after West Ham but haven't been good enough to capitalise. A lot of play is made of the fact that United have to go to Stamford bridge, the Emirates and Anfield but even if United only picked up 3 draws they'd still hold an advantage even if Chelsea were to keep winning. United will have to go Chelsea and take a point but unless there's a big change in fortunes that's all they'll have to do.

WALKING IN A FERGIE WONDERLAND

I'd definately prefer to win the Premiership this year than the CL, though both would be nice. It devalues winning the CL if you aren't Premiership champions as well. Liverpool won the CL in 05 but how can anybody really claim that they were the best team in Europe when they only finished 5th in England? And to paraphrase what Fergie said about Liverpool in the 90s, we need to knock Mourinho and Chelsea right off their f**king perch.

Hopefully Larsson will do well though its a real 'Glazer' signing and short term contracts for strikers in their mid 30s isn't exactly planning for the future. If United get Hargreaves and can get a point at Stamford Bridge, I think they've a great chance of winning the league. If that happens I'd say Fergie might well walk away.
