GAA Discussion / attacking full backs
December 01, 2006, 12:17:59 PM
marc os se may well make the odd foray into attack but tom sullivan or Mccarthy harly ever leave the large square, wheras who ever is in the mayo full bacl line is always liable to attack esp heaney. an attcking fullback is probably his bes poition and its a great sight to see  but it can leave huge holes , maybe what require is a better awareness from the defender of their team mates current position and a willing ness to cover for them as it would be a sham eto lose that flare
mind you none of this was the problem   in sept. :'(

i think i saw the verger running the line with Jom from the 1989 AIF on TG4 last night. did his sons not play underage football and hurling for the county?

Durkin should have passed to Mchale any way instead who was straight in from of goal instaed of larry Also Mchale had a great chance blocked by kerrigan just before that, Cork looked like a seriously hungry team that day.

BTW is it time to let this one lie??

QuoteAgain i wouldn't be so cynical
when it comes to politics are you for real?

as for the Gas swap howth for rossport do  you think thant might change berties mind. basic facts are o manhony is being run as a sweeper to pick up the east mayo and general disaffected GAA Vote without any propect of being elected as with some many of Kennys Ideas a stunt

GAA Discussion / Rosnrun / Mayo51 - Flannagan

i think you misunderstood my comments re flanaghan . he had evry gaelic football talent need to make one of the best corner backs i have seen playing for mayo and its not the flashy skills of a once off willy nally that make you a great player. not every one on the tean can ' make things happen. in a team game all the pieces have to fit and doo the job they are asked . without doubting the talents of our current young player of the year he has an awful lot to learn about corner back play and it doesent matter how many attacks he sets up if he doesn't have the Skills of a corner back and remains playing there then  he cant be considered a great player. this is not an attack on higgins im just illustrating a point that flanaghan was a natural full back with all the positional dependabilty and concentration SKills required for the postion .

he had been playing senior football since he was a lad of about 13/14 hugely gifted at that age. I remember playing against him in glenhest one day and he look like an 8 year old when he came on but no one could get near him. i think there was a severe case of burn out in his early  20's . yet another mayo player not to fullfill his potential. how about a poll on the the most talented who never quite fullfilled .

of course you can be involved in both it just im beginning to suspect its all been a ruse done for the nenfit of enda 'whats a ross port' kenny as o mahony himself hasn't a hope of being elected. celeb candidates liike this are much more about targeting a certain segment of the market and having the bulk of his handlers from the GAA would seem to prove this . very cynical

QuoteFlannagan – like Nallen, very loyal and ever present, but quite limited in pure ability

I think there is a lot of confusion about what makes a great Gaelic football player. i think these pages show how much people are polluted by soccer. A great gaelic footballer does not necessarily need fancy footwork and spectacular score ala Mcdonald Fitzgearld though its brilliant to see. football is so much more of a team game than soccerball and its qualites that you find in the great midfielder that win and loses games in the long run. simple fact forward cant score without good ball into them with a few notable exceptions Donnellan Canavan Mcdonald and very few others look how bad some of our best forward looked against the aussies.some positions eg corner back a not meant to be glamourous and Flanaghan nevr was but he was a wonderfully  skillful corner back compare him to the more attack minded fullback line we had this year and he look very solid in comparison not as eyecatch but a genuine corner back.
to call flanaghan nallen WJP TJK. ect limited only exposes a lack of understanding of football and you d probably be better off watching the premiership. whiere player are so protected a hand on the shoulder is now a bookable offence.

watch it again. the guy attempts to strike . its not frankies fault that from years of scrapping on and off the pitch hes developed a good dodge and pucnch move.though will the corofin man have john maughans class to say he slipped when gerry flanaghan smaked him one in castle bar . and kept flanaghan out of trouble cause maughan knew he was in the wrong, then again maughan is a gentle man and  a legend
