GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh v Cavan Sun 8th June
June 09, 2014, 08:37:24 PM
Might seem silly but the row at the start set the game up nicely IMO.

Athletic Grounds was like a cauldron after that. Both teams raring to go but I think Cavan were a bit too psyched up. In terms of blame, both sides have to take some responsibility.. Cavan did start it though.  :P

They seemed to search for confrontation in the early stages, and even in the match the no3 (Dunne?) was constantly acting the bollox for the duration of the first half.

Genuinely fancied Armagh to win after last year's debacle, but never as easy as they did. Lots of things to work on, especially in the forward line, but a semi-final in Clones to look for, myles you can see plenty of buckfast enthusiasts out that day I can assure you  ;)

McIlroy comes across very honest in any interview, as does GMac who is very likeable.  You don't hear too much about the like of McIlroys foundation which last week donated something like £1 million to childrens cancer charities. How many other stars do this?

Eh?  thousands of sports stars and celebrities raise money for charities.

My point was that he gets no credit for doing anything yet people here jump on him for anything at all.  He has done nothing really to deserve any hatred, and as I said there wouldn't be many other Irish sports people who raise a million for charity.  As for this craic about him being spoiled, where does this come from?  Spoiled is someone who got everything they wanted when growing up, and I'm sure he got raised no differently to many of us.  As for the present, he has a lot of money and can buy what he wants I imagine, but again he would be no more 'spoiled' than Brian O'Driscoll or any other highly paid sports star.
His parents worked over-time for a good part of his childhood to fund his talent eg build a practice area at the family home - all worth it mind. So yeah he may well have been a bit spoilt growing up.

I agree with everything else though. The guy gets slaughtered. Bad timing with the break up no doubt but better now than 4/5 years down the line.

I like Rory, I've met him albeit before his fame went global, he was as a humble quiet lad who didn't drink.

I agreed with Joe at the time and still do with the sentiment, his choice of language was poor though.

I wouldn't worry too much about Sean's reputation, he's a gentleman and a media darling.

Only non-GAA people would get the wrong end of the stick and I doubt there are very many of them in the loop with what Brolly et al say.

Campbell has to start, if he has maintained his league form. Him and Clarke two dangerous men if the right ball is put in.

At this rate, 4 would be lucky lol

They played Louth earlier in the week with 21 lads not playing
How'd that game finish?

Armagh / Re: Armagh Club football & hurling

Armagh will win Division 3 next year. I'd near put the house on it. The talent available is simply too good and despite what people say about Grimley I'd have enough confidence in him and his backroom team to let him continue next season.

The match v Donegal on Sunday was certainly there for the taking and if refereed fairly we'd have got something out of it. Add in the Down game and we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

So far this year injuries have taken their toll, I wouldn't fret too much and in fact I am relishing the match v Cavan where I am fairly confident, pending a few returning from injury, that we can progress to the next round.

First off, hat tip to screenexile for the gussy pics ;) much appreciated.

As for Jim Allister, this is the same type of pretentious p***k that would support hundreds of loyalists gathering to march through villages like Rasharkin and think nothing of it re feelings of people that actually live there.

I'm sure there are more pressing issues to be worrying him, for example the poor academic achievement of young working class males in his 'community'. Maybe if he made a better effort to address this there wouldn't be the situation where a few students feel offended by GAA jerseys.

It's borderline pathetic that a university like UUJ with such a strong reputation for it's sporting excellence is considering these moves based on the rant of some gobshite bigot still stuck in the 1690s.

Any A4 owners in here? Looking at buying an 09 diesel with about 70-80k miles on the clock. Saw some good examples but am apprehensive especially buying privately. Someone mentioned clutch issues with this car - is this common? Bit of a novice when it comes to this carry on, Any experts?

The A4 is a great car. I have sold loads of them and also service quite a few for customers. They have their faults but all cars do. If it has a good Audi service history you can't go far wrong. We bring them in from England. Most are Ex-company cars with good histories and motorway miles. English miles are much better than Irish I find.
Thanks. Yeah the one I'm looking at has one previous owner (retired) which to me is a good sign. It looks a clean enough car and full Audi service history. Would you know if any other maintenance work would be due on it soon if its at 70k, timebelt has been done recently on the one I'm after but as far as I know that's it.

A4's can be troublesome so pick a good one, there's plenty of choice out there. Turbo's, injectors, pumps and starter failures can be common. Diesel quality in the south is sh*t, I know cause we have a maintenance company. Since common rail injection arrived, diesel pump replacements have greatly increased so I'd recommend replacement of the fuel filter at each service.

Bought a 08 A4 two years ago. Had 70K miles on it. Never had a minute's trouble with it. Got a company car last year so got rid of it after only having it for about 18 months so limited enough time with it. But would definitely reccommend. Might be worth considering a trip to UK. We managed to lop about 1500 yoyos of the price for a similar car over here. (We were going to London anyway to see an inlaw, so flew over and then just took the ferry back with the car)

I have an A4 Avant. Great car. Mine has about 55k on clock. No problems with it so far anyway.
Mine is the 1.9 TDI engine.
Cheers for the input lads. Had a look at England and to be honest don't have the time to be shopping around and then trying to arrange flights over, ferries home etc. I'd be hoping to get a 1.9 TDI also, have drove similar VAGs before so I'm confident enough, just worried because there's always the risk when you buy privately that you might end up with a dud!

Surely a bit of road running is useful in building a bit of stamina before and leading into presason?

Over the mountain and down to Moira roundabout has always been a reliable Plan B for myself.

My club usually start Jan/Feb.

Personally I think there is nothing wrong in getting some road running done pre-Christmas and perhaps a weights programme, so that come proper 'collective' pre-season the bodies are tuned that wee bit better with slightly better fitness levels than 30 odd puddings carrying extra Christmas weight.

I know that the second most clubs exit the championship they stop training unless they're still in the hunt for promotion/league title, so a lot of clubs could have been finished up now for a good few months.

I've heard of clubs out running the roads in Oct/Nov but I think that is ripping it a slight bit.

Of the current squad there are 3 who transferred into the club from other clubs and didn't come up through the ranks. Of those 3, 2 have direct links to the club/area with parents having lived here/played for the club but moved away.
And did the whole families transfer back or do the rest of the clan still play away with their original club? ;)

Aghagallon (Antrim) and Magheralin (Down) are about 2.5 miles apart.
Magheralin is about 2 miles from the Lurgan clubs (Armagh) and Aghagallon is about 4 miles.

7 clubs in a 5 mile radius covering 3 counties.
