I'm not suggesting he was Derry's best ever footballer, and he was before my time, but I think Peter Stevenson deserves a mention. The man could play basically anywhere, think he captained Derry to a couple of Ulsters and seems to be Derry's "forgotten All Star".

No, he doesn't

No he doesn't what?

DESERVE A MENTION

I went for Tohill but it was a close call with Scullion who was simply one of the greatest defenders I've ever seen. McGilligan and Brolly as already mentioned would stand favourable comparison with anyone of this era in their positions. Its truly shocking how this Derry team never managed a second All-Ireland.

A combination of that Great Down team and the ineptness of the Derry County board destroyed any chances Derry had of another AI.
If we had beaten Down in 94, I think we'd have went on to win that year, but the rest is history.
If only we'd had a back door back then.......

To many IFS THERE!! Remember this great team which grows in folklore by the day, capitulated in 92, 94,95,96 and 97

Surely Damian Cassidy deserves a mention. The best footballer that Bellaghy ever produced and we have produced a few!

are you looking a place on the panel :D

Naw, but I have a good chance of his backroom staff , not many footballing greats in there!

Serious allegations about Loughguile minors on the Derry thread- I was alwys of the opinion that Loughguile was a proud hurling club.

Cross had a very good secong half yesterday. The 5/10 mins before half time was vital as well, Cross got a few scores & the gap was a lot tighter than it should have been.
Should be a tight final

BTW, at the game yesterday St Eunan's conceded 2 free's when the ref blew them up for flicking the ball away on the ground. I thought this was legal??

Noticed that myself, thought it was allowed if you went to ground with the ball. I thought the referee gave Crossmaglen some very handy frees but Cross were brilliant in the second half with all the old hands pulling together the second half. Should be a good final but  CROSS DON'T LOSE FINALS.

The Derry Championship is not a good template to be following.

1. Far to many games to be played and this causes alot of other teams to suffer. Eg Hurling clubs, the Derry county teams, and the season to be very long and drawn out. Eg Derry leagues are only finishing now and the Derry Football team were beat in the first round of the qualifiers.

2. It leads to dead rubber games where teams have nothing to play for in final round (already qualified or already out) and they can have the intensity of a charity match on boxing day.

3. The group system basically ensures that the top teams all make the QFs because they may be caught on the hop in a group game but will end up winning the other 2 and this removes the chances of a smaller club having an impact.

The Derry  format is an excellent idea. It gives teams more high profile games and the top teams don't always get through eg Loup this year and Castledawson last year. The only objectors are the hurlers who whinge continuously about everything and county managers who would prefer that club would be done away with altogether.

You Antrim folk amuse me. Instead of complaining about Liam Bradley, you should be celebrating the fact that someone with managerial experience has decided to sacrifice his reputation to take you. Remember you are amongst the worst counties in the country, you have no tradition and if Sean Boylan and Alex ferguson took you it would still be an impossible task.
And as for SS2 talking about the "promised land"- where exactly would that be in Antrim  terms- more than 15 turning up for training.

Brilliant article in the COUNTY DERRY POST on this topic today by Fergal P. McCusker. he referred to the number of neutral supporters  at the Latton/Ballinderry game who turned at the gate and went home. To me he hit the nail on the head as far as the grassroot supporters are concerned in compared to the corporate ones who attend the big games in Croke park as guests of companies.

Were under 16s allowed in free of charge does anyone know ?

Yes, but they were challenging them claiming that some were over sixteen. Anyhow, where would a 17 year old still at school get £12 yesterday to gain admission?

As far as paying for their staff, I think that this is part of trhe problem and that a big reduction in their staff wouldn't be noticed as far as production would be concerned.

I went to Coalisland today to give support to my club mate Damian cassidy. Could not beleive the admission price of £12. How can the Ulstetr Council justify this price. I met families going home. There was mayhem around the gates as supporters could not come to terms with the price. I saw two parents with two teenage daughters no older than 15 years trying to gather up the necessary £48 to gain entrance. I saw young boys and girls standing outside, not allowed in to support their teams. The programme at £2 was nothing more than a list of teams who weren't even playing at this venue.
Hang your head in shame Ulster Council, if this is how you are going to promote Gaelic games among the youth and grass roots  and i think you are certainly not in touch with the grass roots.
