Armagh / Re: Armagh Club football & hurling

Hi folks, asked to post this up on the site by a friend and although I have it on a thread thought it was prob most relevant to yous so posted it here also.

Ballymacnab taking a lead from some of the smaller university clubs who have been using this for years but I Actually think this will prob become a more common way of getting sponsorship in current climate.

Fantastic marketing and sponsorship opportunity for just ₤25

Dear Sir/Madame

I would like to offer you a fantastic marketing opportunity for your company.  The Senior team of St Brenda's Camogie Club Ballymacnab, County Armagh are ordering a full new kit for the upcoming season and have come up with a novel idea to offer businesses the chance to have their name printed on the front of the kit for just ₤25.

Ballymacnab are one of the top teams in Ulster with 17 senior championships and are known province wide and much further a field due to this success. In 2008 they won the Armagh senior League, were runners up in the Armagh senior championship, were runners up in the Ulster Senior League and reached the semi-finals of the All Ireland 7s in Dublin.  2009 is expected to be another highly successful year.  Whichever business has their name on the Ballymacnab kit can expect it to be seen all over Armagh, throughout Ulster, and on the All Ireland stage later in the year, with lots of media coverage that will again bring the businesses name into the public eye.

How does it Work?

With the current economic climate the club felt it would be unfair and unrealistic to ask any one business to fit the total bill for the new kit so the following idea will be used.

There are 24 players on the senior panel and each player must sell 2 tickets at ₤25  to businesses that are interested in this fantastic opportunity.  The names of each of these businesses will be entered into a draw and the winner will be the sponsor for the upcoming year.  Each Business will have a 1 in 48 chance of having their name on the kit for just ₤25.   The winner will also appear in the Irish news and local papers presenting the new kit with their name on it to the team, offering even more exposure for your business.

All entries to the draw must be submitted and confirmed by

1:00PM on Friday 13th March

I keep a crowbar under the bed and a hurley at the bottom of the stairs. Just in case like, I would never use them  :-X

Hope you get to the bottom of your stairs before the intruders do :o

What's it called when you are taken out by your own weapon?....other than unlucky.

Well it's tucked behind the banister out of view and is there for anyone who tried to get shirty at the front door. If on the off chance an intruder has x-ray vision and spots the concealed hurley and tools himself up with it, I'd relish the chance at having the excuse to beat seven shades of shit out of him with the crowbar.

Donagh where the hell do you live if you need a hurl to answer the front door? ???

There was a good interview with Gerry Storey in the Sunday Times Sport last week if anyone could post up a link, very intertesting article about him and the Holy Family gym.

i saw that in the times on sunday. it was a very good interview. i would love to know how much of it is true though, some of it sounded a bit far fetched, but it was definitely obvious that storey didnt take sides at all when dealing with boxing.

where can the rogan fight be watched on tv?

Think the fight is on sky sports on saturday night. Its on the same bill as the couple of British Olympians including James DeGale who seems to be a bit of a p***k!

That is a total understatement.

He is a complete c**k and for an Englishman he can hardly speak a word of English.  He will be sheltered from anyone who can actually throw a punch (ala Khan) as he has a glass chin (ala Khan) and will build up a reputation through beating the dregs of the scene and being hyped up by the Brit media.

Then WHAM!!

knocked out by first decent fighter he meets (ala Khan) ;D ;D

I personnaly am looking forward to the day. ;D ;D

I think this ban was coming to him for a number of reasons. Firstly the feile debacle staying the hotel, the over age player incident and the acutal offence itself, I think the initial ban was 24 if I am correct and this was extended on appeal.

Could someone please explain what exactly he done (or is supposed to have done) to receive a 48 week ban.

Is JP mone injured for Monaghan at the min or is he out of the picture? Could be wrong but dont think he played in the last 2 league games.

If i was to pick a likely winner of this game I would prob have to go with the Monaghan men. Armagh looked very shakey against laois and monaghan seem to be a more settled outfit. Armagh are missing the Cross men, and although only a couple would be definite starters, others would strengthen an inexperienced and pretty weak looking bench. But It will be very tight and really could go either way. Would expect Monaghan to bring a decent crowd to the game with it being near hand and against their neighbours.
I agree that another home loss at this stage would almost certainly signal the end of Armaghs promotion hopes.

camogie?? skills may not be as up to scratch as hurling but stil enjoyable to watch an even better to play  ;D
also have played gaelic before an the skills needed for camogie are ten fold that off foozball   :-X ;)

worst sports?
cricket (insert yawning face)
table tennis

Tell me Dolly, why oh why do these sportswomen insist on hitting the thing along the gound?  I dont play hurling but I can perform the basic skills to a decent level. This includes getting the ball up into my hand!!!!

WHY DO THEY HIT IT ALONG THE GROUND?!

you said that you were forced to watch these matches at school? wel have you watched a senior game recently?alot more lifting now than in the past. not sure why it was encouraged more to strike on the ground but its changing, not quite to the same standard as hurling yet..but were getting there  ;D
stil think theres much more skill required for camogie than football though!

Your 100% correct there Derry Dolly.

In ladies football they play with a size 4 football (same as u14 fellas) and are allowed to lift the ball straight of the ground and it is still piss poor.

A couple of years ago i ended up going to watch Armagh v Cork in the All Ireland Senior Ladies Football final at Croker and the standard was very poor.  The game was very very slow and the skills were like a poor U16 club team. No player was able to kick the ball (size 4) any more than 30 - 35 yards and all the points were scored from inside 25 yards as they couldnt reach the goals from any further out.  To top it of an Armagh forward went for a point from about 25yards out, straight in front of the goals and like the rest of them, it was struggling to make it over the bar and dropped into the net over the keepers head (who was no stranger to the chippy).

A good Male u16 club team would have beat the pick of the 2 teams that day.

I also dont know why they call it 'Ladies' football, when most of them are complete men - look up the Muck Savages thread to hear some nice tales about them.

I agree Curling is a dung sport also. remember that scary 'man' Rona with the banana man Jaw, who was captain of some Brit team that won something? total ming dinger (think she went on to play Ladies football for Armagh ;) ;)

Lawn bowls is a joke also

And that sh*t Dressage and Cricket sicken my hoop.

How many Dromintee Defenders are likely to be on the Armagh county Panel? and how many would you say have a (real) chance of starting in a championship match?

QuoteHe has excelled at every level he has played at

Every level bar senior inter-county.

So far.

I would agree with Drung here, Charlie hasnt proved it at Senior intercounty level yet BUT he has only been on the panel 1 year and is very young.

I have seen Vernon play lots of times for Queens, Harps, Armagh and at underage and he does look a good player and I do think he will make an impression at Senior intercounty in the next few years, but I wouldnt be convinced that he is going to be a "Great" of the game, as some would have us believe.

Having seen him play in numerous teams and positions it is my opinion that his best positions are probably Mid field or CHB but he is never a forward, defensive or otherwise, and when played in WHF for Armagh last year he looked lost in most of the games and although he was working very hard he was played out of position. Against Fermanagh in the drawn Ulster final he dissapeared, but to be fair so did some much more seasoned players.

If Vernon was given a go in his more natural positions of Mid-Field or CHB i think he could make more of an impact for the Armagh county team.

He is a better Midfielder than Toner, but I think Toner will be given plenty of chances here as he is a favourite of McDonnell, and I would actually rate D McKenna from cross ahead of both and with McGrane a certainity its hard to see Vernon being given a fair shot here or claiming a spot.

At CHB, Donaghy is not going to be played here, A O'Rourke (good passer but bit slow and can be loose marker) is almost certain to be retained and any experimentation will involve C McKeever who is a great man marker but also has the feet of a Drunk epileptic, thus his distribution is a series of kicks for touch that make ronan O'Gara jealous. Vernon has good passing ability (not as good AOR but still good) and his marking and fitness levels are top notch. I would try him here for Armagh - but it wont happen.

Unfortunately, Vernon will probably be played out of position in the HF line again or as a third midfielder dropping between MF and HB line thus curbing his natural game and causing many a frustrated glance towards the management by Charlie and supporters.

I know the county board do try their best and I try to praise them when they do good, but year after year they defy logic and don;t put on double headers, I just can't figure it out?

Have you seen what they charge into senior championship games, can't see how they make any money at all, if there was double headers they'd be broke  :P

My argument is that they would actually make much more.

Nuetral fans would be himmin and haain (some spelling there) about going to see a match, but it they got too matches for a pound or two extra, the extra fans should, in theory, be significant, therefore eradicating any downfall from changing it to one game and, in the end, ensuring profit. Also the matches would hgave better attendance, better atmosphere and would be better all round. I believe Derry and Tyrone have double-headers and draw a massive crowds, but I could be wrong.

Not 100% on Tyrone doing it all the time, but know it definately happens at times.

Your 100% about Derry championship though. Double headers are the done thing which always bring in huge crowds with 4 teams playing and a large influx of neutrals. The only 2 situations where games arent double headers are, when all there are a heap of games on the one weekend so a stand alone game may be fitted in on a friday night (this only happens at first round), or when there is a replay needed it may be stand alone if no suitable curtain raiser is available, (eg. another replay from Junior, intermediate or senior, or an underage game)

The Derry county board can be a joke at times but one thing they do well is championship Football at Junior intermediate and senior levels.
Senior, Intermediate and Junior championship games are all double and triple headers and all can be mixed in with each other, eg Junior game followed by intermediate, intermediate followed by Senior or junior followed by senior, and the Senior championship is set out so as if you wanted you could see every minute of every game and also see all of the intermediate and junior championships (if you really wanted)

The crowds at these games are pretty huge and as I mentioned neutrals travel from all over the county and from neighbouring counties to see them, but it must be remembered that Club GAA is a huge Draw in Derry and is the most important part for the vast majority of our gaels.
