GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh management :Confusion reigns
September 15, 2009, 07:53:45 PM
The Irish News is adopting a clever campaign here.

They plan to name anyone ever involved in a County team so when a new Armagh manager is announced the headline will scream "You heard it here first"!!

There is no professional  GAA county board in Ireland. County boards have a max of one full time posistion. The rest are volunteers.

Agree with this. Been away for the last week and only catching up on events. It was depressing before I went. Sinking to new lows now.

I don't know much about the County Board. What is it they're doing that is causing the outcry. And if they all resigned today, are there better people to replace them?

Not sure who will get the managers job, but based on the fact there is no obvious candidates within the county, then I would like it to go to someone from within the County who understands the football structures and has proven ability at some level and is hungry for the role.

Please God, not Houlie and Oisin. Donal Murtagh, Justin, Aiden O'Rourke etc. Names that have actually managed at a high enough level.

Whoever gets it if they don't get full support  from CB, clubs, players and supporters, then we may keep this thread open for this time next year

With regards Grimley being asked, anyone who's name is put forward has to be asked before they can be nominated by a club?

Thing that would interest me would be the backroom team. Under JK, we had an exceptional back room team. There was a story of how CB helped finance John McCloskey to goto Australia for Rugby World cup to see how international teams trained. Under prevous back room staff, apparently there was a 10% discount for players on ice cream at a well known filling station in Armagh!

I'm sure majority of Armagh fans will support Tyrone. I'd expect the same the other way. Would be a bit sad to see Tyrone cheering Kerry

I know Eamonn too from Uni. I think it was the year Down first won their first all Irealand (91).  I think in that same match Anyhony Tohill and Joe Brolly came on having just come back from Aussie Rules? (Could be wrong about that)

Eamonn was a really talented guy. Was captain of Hogan Cup winning team in 1990 and also won All Ireland minors.

Sad to read coments about sabotage today. Don't know Peter, but he appears a man who is very genuine. Also, the back room guys are all Armagh through and through.
Can't understand some of the negativity around JK also. He won us an All Ireland FFS. One interesting thing about Joes time was there was never any stories came outside the camp. Obviously not true in current squad.

Still having Bumpy as manager cheered me up. His good nature would quell the dressing room ;D :D

Have to say following the Monaghan match I'm glad Peter resigned. Very frustrating last few weeks watching the likes of Donegal and Wicklow progressing to last 12 and we we never got started. I think most Armagh fans were prepared to give Peter a fair crack of the whip, but after the last match things looked like they were very much digressing.

I think the CB will take their time with this and it could take to October. After all, whats the rush? Personally, I'd like to see Geezer and Big Paul back with the likes of Marsden or McGrane involved. I think Brian McAlinden will be a strong candidate. He did a good job with U21s and thats where last manager came from. Would also like to see Liam McCorry involved in coaching role, but again he works with Ulster council so not sure where that fits in.

Was Charlie Vernon playing? Heard rumour he was due to?

Personally I think the reason people weren't too disappointed on Sunday was because there was the potential of building a solid team. Shannon and Donaghy did really well and perhaps Finn Mo will lose out next day (as may Hearty) There was plenty of forward who could have come on and Forker did well and could fit in well. There is the potential to formulate / stumble upon a really solid team if you can get a decent run in the qualifiers. If you get to the Q/Finals, it'll have been a good July and you take your chances

Truely awful performance last night in brefni. none of the new men showed a thing. only vincent martin at full back could claim anything like parity. of the old men, clarke had a great 10 minute spell when he was finally restored to full forward but this wandering around midfield lark doesn't suit him at all. decent mention for shannon but the rest were rank.

rodgers can't kick the ball out. smith was destroyed. his man scored 1-05 and won the game for cavan yet there was no switch made for the entire 70 mins, despite shannon going well in the other corner. WTF? Donnelly and McDonald were ineffective at wing back and McClelland was very poor. his man skinned him in the second half particularly and why o why o why does he solo the ball constantly?

O'Neill and Lavery were anonymous for the most part. the only exception being when someone gave the ball to lavery he manages to run around in circle for 10 or 20 seconds before giving it back to the man who gave it to him in the first place!

toner, mallon and marty o'rourke were totally ineffective. mallon in particular has had 3 bad McKenna cup games and simply is not getting the business done. two o'rourkes inside were ok with poor supply. newtown one was nippy but took the wrong option in dangerous situations constantly. dromintee one is a great man to win a ball but he doesn't do anything with it... def doesn't anna shoot (is this lad not more of a half forward?)

all of the subs contributed less than zero. particular mention for peader toal who played the whole second half and never actually touched the ball til 25 mins in. didn't wanna know.

most worrying is the management. couldn't see obvious switches like smith off and clarke to the square. the ball was carried rugby league style the length of the field in search of scores. the exception was the first few mins when clarke went on the square and when the ball was kicked into him and he scored a couple in a minute. guess what... no half forwards!

Agree with other poster who thought your comments were harsh. Considering the night that it was I thought there were some good performances. Thought Brian Mallon had played really well in all three games to date and hope he gets the opp to stay in this role in the league. The midfield was poor enough and that has been in the case in all games to date as well. Ronan Clarke was terrific and Kevin ORourke showed up well. Also good to see Peadar Toal again. Barry McDonald was pretty sound at half back for his first game. Won plenty of possession and always used the ball well.  Having said all that the highlight of last night was probably the bag of chips on the way home!

Surprised Enda hasn't got a touch. In the second half he looked desparately out of shape. Took half an hour to turn. Maybe he's done no training, but he's like the rest of us. Getting too old

Great to see Brian Mallon back. He ran out of steam a bit but looks a cert for CHF this year.

No offence, but I hope you weren't one of his pupils. If so, not such a great teecher then

Surprised by choice. perhaps they thought McDonnel was a fresh start and Grimley was a step back, opening divisions with Cross, etc

FFS, Youse are being a bit harsh on Hearty. Did McKinney not also get caught in no mans land in the league game against Galway earlier in the year. Not surprised that Joe didn't change the team. Thats his form and thats fair enough. I just hope that if he needs to, he makes changes earlier than against Donegal. Would be worried about who will mark Enda Muldonn as I think our Enda will pick up Pady Bradley again.

Other than that Marsden has been getting back to himself and that augurs well. Just to be really controversal I though Stephen Kernan didn't look out of place the last day.

Any word on Clarke or Mallon?
