QuoteOnly one contradiction to it. If I remember correctly, you were more often the boxed than the boxer

I'll know where to go if i ever need a defence witness.   ;)

In all honesty, i've had a fair few slaps over the years, most of them well warranted, but very few in London, contrary to what Horatio says I always found London football fairly soft and this is in comparison to Down which is not exactly noted for it's robustness either.

Pat Griffin is still about although we don't see him at Ruislip that often anymore. He managed London for three years back in the 90s.

His selector(possibly Irunthev under a different handle) and trainer (bigkickout) from that era posted on the old board, i suspect Pat lurks here himself.

Played myself with and against the foillowing in the eighties and nineties

Timmy Dowd (Kerry,Tomas Mac Curtains)
John Costelloe (Laois, Round Towers)
Kieran Mc Garvey (Tyrone, Round Towers)
Vinny Claffey (Offaly, Round Towers)
Tom Brady (Offaly, Round Towers)
Shane Tulley (Sligo, Naomh Mhuire)
Eoin Hamilton (Monaghan, Parnells)
John Joyce (r.i.p) (Galway, Parnells)
Kieran Gilhooley (Longford, Naomh Mhuire, Tir Connell Gaels)
Sean, Peter, Liam & Danny Mc Grellis (Derry, Naomh Mhuire)
Michael Connacur (Roscommon, Naomh Mhuire)
Senan snr, Senan jnr and Paul Hehir (Clare, Parnells & Tara)
Dean Nullec (some pokey hole in Armagh, St Brendans)

The best footballers i played with or against in 12 years in London were Michael Connacur, Sean Mc Grellis and Pat Rafter. Not sure if Rafter played county in Ireland but he should have and Roscommon and Derry would have been better teams if the other two boys had stayed at home.

played' 2 games with john mitchels in 93ish. It was too much hassle between the pints. IntoDwest had a longer carrer with them

May have boxed with Intodwest in the early nineties if his first name is Michael?

rufus you might want to add that Stevie had the batin of Kerry in the first half this year. Had he accepted the chances on offer, there was no way back for Kerry.

Still with the 65 min theory, there's always time to recover from a howler early in the game if you're good enough, thats why mistakes in the last five are more likely to 'cost' games.

for consequences and avoidability it is hard to go past the Mayo keeper letting the ball hop in 96, sure they still haven't got over it

Bit light still on the hurlers, more to with their scarcity here than in politics i'd say.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the one who takes no prisoners i'd say the blueshirts are under represented as well.

QuoteKerry defence in the dying moments of the drawn 2000 All-Ireland final

If I recall right Kerry got out of Jail similarly in the drawn semi when all Bumpy O Hagan (or was it Andy Mc Cann?) had to do was kick it dead, didn't and up the field they went for M Fitz to equalise. Or is my anti kerry paranoia playing tricks on me again.

Who appeared in five successive All-Ireland Senior Football Finals in the fifties (including replays)?

Hardy, I'd guess it was a referee but I haven't found a name yet.

I'd say Peter Mc Dermott

Unlike my orange cousins, I grew up believing that the Free State was run by GAA men not the clergy, so I was surprised there weren't more examples on this thread. so to reinforce my predjudices i googled ' gaelic footballer politician'. I got many less hits than I thought i would, i did however get a hit for one of the posters on this thread.  ;) . Indeed by my reckoning two of the posters on this thread alone would be prospective future members of the seanad, which sorta kinda not really reinforces my predjudices.  ;D

GAA Discussion / Re: Noel Thompson

Wobbler if you look up the page you'll see that i have no problem with the reporting of the incidents and yes there would have been brief highlights of the match if no violence had occurred as BBC's ONE camera dedicated to gaelic games was in Casement park anyway. My beef was with Thompson saying that maybe there should be a monday feature on the GAA showing the boxing from the weekend. The inference being that these savages are at it all the time but we cant get round it all as we have to show 'highlights' from all the one man and his dog League games.

For the avoidance of doubt this thread was not meant as a pop at Jerome or Mark Sidebottom, I have nothing but admiration for all of the Championship team but decisions on funding of sports coverage does not lie with them. Which leads me to the second/final point if you really believe that 'regional' soccer coverage is less than 'regional' gaa coverage or even proportionate to their followings then we'll have to agree to differ on that point.

I agree with Donagh about making our views heard re disproportionate coverage because rest assured the BBC receive plenty of complaints when GAA is shown. The squeakiest wheel gets the oil.

Ziggy you may not give a fcuk but i do, mainly because as uselessfootballer says

QuoteCoverage and comments such as last nights certainly makes the recruitment of kids from families that don't have a GAA background all the more difficult.

Things like this might not matter in Greencastle or other places where the battle for hearts and minds is won, they do where we're toiling. I accept that a large part of the problem stems from the GAA itself but it bugs the hell out of me when a whole organisation can be stereotyped the way Thompson did last night.

Wobbler do you honestly think that if this had happened at the Antrim County final that it wouldn't have made its way to our screens?

5sams as someone who grew up with Leslie Dawes and Charlie Witherspoon maybe mentioning the AIF after the tiddlywinks, i accept that things have improved immeasurably especially on the BBC, but like a lot of things in our lovely little entity, should we accept second best because it's not last?

edit sorry meant this to be in this thread in the first place but logged out  :-[
