Wee James takes Ballinderry reins

Former Down star James McCartan has been appointed manager of Derry giants Ballinderry.

Wee James - an All-Ireland medalist with the Mourne County in 1991 and '94 and part of a legendary Down GAA dynasty - succeeds Michael McKinless, who led Ballinderry to county SFC glory last year.

McCartan's grandfather Briney was the first member of the famous Mourne clan to play for Down, while his father James, uncle Dan and cousin Greg Blaney are all All-Ireland winners.

Ballinderry, previous All-Ireland club champions, reached this season's Ulster club final only to lose to Crossmaglen after a replay.

McCartan was involved last year with Antrim senior champions St Gall's and also helped Queen's University to Sigerson Cup success in 2007. He has also previously managed Burren, the club he once transferred to from Tullylish.

Didn't know there was a caravan park in Ballinderry.   ;)

General discussion / Chasing the Dollar

A £250,000 BBC TV programme about a group of entrepreneurs which had been "buried" in the television schedules after it was revealed that one of the businessman was a convicted fraudster has been resurrected. The six-part series which was shown at varying times on Sunday afternoons on BBC2 with limited promotional support and concerns were raised that it had been bumped down the schedules amid revelations that one contestant was a convicted fraudster, as well as complaints about the role of Invest NI and the University of Ulster.
The six finalists were established entrepreneurs Oliver Higgins, Paul McKenna, Enda McShane, Raymond Moan, Patricia O'Hagan and Brad Turkington. Turkington withdrew from filming after it was discovered he had served nearly three years in jail for fraud offences.  The BBC denied it had "buried" the show.  It said the discovery of Turkington's conviction had not affected its scheduling and the show was promoted in what was described as the "normal way".

Well now, a few months later and things have obviously changed.  This show has been given a prime time slot at 7.30 on a Tuesday night on BBC 1.  It must obviously have gone down well the first time round.

BTW Patricia O' Hagan wins.

GAA Discussion / Minor Trial Games
January 14, 2009, 05:16:46 PM
Just came across this notification.

Re: Minor Trial Games

A Chara,

The issue of Trial games for County Minor Teams ahead of the start of collective training for Minor Teams on March 1st 2009 was discussed by An Coiste Bainistí at the weekend. The following was agreed:
1. Counties are permitted to hold two internal trial games only in the months of January and February
2. These games should only involve players who were not part of the 2008 County Minor Panel
3. There is no permission to play "trial" or "challenge" games with teams from other counties, with college teams etc. before March 1st
4. Collective training for the County Minor Panel(s) should not commence until March 1st.

You are also asked to note that the GAA's Insurance scheme's are unlikely to provide cover in circumstances where Counties are operating outside the terms outlined above in respect of collective training and/or games and that any activities organised without the permission of Central Council or in contravention of its stated policies may prejudice any potential insurance claim for accidents/injuries which occur in such circumstances and may have very serious implications for your County.

I wonder how many countys will adhere to this directive from Croke Park?  If its anything like senior county teams not training during November and December, I'd say not too many.

Over the weekend, Down revamped their website and there has been some discussion on whether it is better or worse. How do you feel about your county website and the options it offers?  Who do you feel has the best website in Ulster?
