GAA Discussion / Nature vs Nurture
February 04, 2012, 03:35:12 PM
We have people like Tony Scullion (Derry) and Ryan McMenamin who never represented their counties at underage level and yet went on to become All-Star legends.

But can hard work only take you so far without underlying natural ability? Or can anyone really go as far as the like with the right attitude?

GAA Discussion / Kildare-Dublin: FOOTBALL talk
January 22, 2012, 10:21:19 PM
Leaving the off-the-ball antics to one side, I thought the game today was extremely interesting.

Dublin look out of shape and, fringe players or not, were playing too many aimless balls to the forward line and couldn't keep pace with Kildare attacks. If Kildare's shooting was so poor (they miscued 14 of their 26 shots), Dublin would've been sent packing with their tails between their legs and the entire country would be raving about them.

It's still January, but I reckon the Leinster Championship will be even more intriguing this year

GAA Discussion / Group C - Derry
January 09, 2012, 01:13:17 PM
Yes, they played with a vastly new-look team, but Derry managed to register just 5 shots from play during their opening 70 minutes of the 2012 season.

It was disappointing to note how often they tried to play the running game as well considering this was their biggest mistake against the blanket defence of Donegal.

We did an analysis of their performance and looked at their tendencies and their complete lack of efficiency at creating chances with yesterday's team.

If Cavan's defence wasn't so naive, they would have won easily.

GAA Discussion / GAA Personality of the Year

Any suggestions for a worthy winner of this title?

For me, the two stand-outs would have to be Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny - of course) and Pat Gilroy. The former, for obvious reasons; Gilroy for managing to produce some scintilating football but also create a style that finally meant Dublin could actually progress and cause a shake-up - never mind win!

Also don't think Colm Cooper should be too far away...

There's a poll starting here: http://bit.ly/tM1hEu if you're interested

GAA Discussion / Joe Brolly Endorsing Drugs?
December 06, 2011, 07:43:59 PM
This is a snippet from Brolly's latest column which is probably doing the rounds in papers up and down the country:

"It's obvious Micko never took drugs. If he had spent a day/night/day/night/day at Club Amnesia in Ibiza as a young man, he would never have dreamt of going to Wicklow to get his kicks."

Witty, as usual, but how careless and irresponsible. In an attempt to be "one of the lads", Brolly's whole article has signalled drink as the main point of our sport - and thought the idea to abstain from it for any period of time was ludicrous.

GAA Discussion / Proposed Fixture List Change
November 28, 2011, 07:53:47 PM
At the minute, Gaelic Footballers are being dragged in every direction by so many different teams with different priorities.

We need to have each competition running and peaking at the same time - for marketing reasons, for scientific purposes, and for rationale purposes.

Here are the proposed changes: http://bit.ly/ry12nD

GAA Discussion / Winter Training Ban
November 25, 2011, 10:41:10 PM
What utter garbage.

It solves nothing. Why try to stop county training (when they can't police that anyway) in November/December when it is dead whilst clubs and colleges are still booming with activity.

This, in no way, addresses player burnout because the footballers they are trying to help are still completely flat out - and it doesn't even attempt to ease the load on underage players who are under the most pressure and can play for more teams.

Some stats: http://bit.ly/rXxUcC

I think the whole scheduling needs to be changed - trying to work something out but, at the minute, cannot come up with least controversial solution!

GAA Discussion / GAA Undermining International Rules
November 04, 2011, 10:28:48 AM
Club season goes on for 9 months - should be well wrapped up before.

For a patriotic sport, why are players made to feel bad about wanting to represent their country?

The game should promote itself but the marketing of the series - which includes the very best players in our sport - is non-existent.

http://sc1sports.com/gaa-undermining-international-rules/ (This is a good article - if i say so myself)

We shouldn't be so opposed to letting our sport grow.
