Title: Why are there no hill tickets for Sunday?
Post by: AN other on August 26, 2008, 10:42:19 PM
Anybody know why there are no hill tickets for Sunday's game? I know I would much prefer to purchase a cheaper terrace ticket with a half decent view of the game than a dearer ticket at the back of the upper Canal tier. Unless it was front of the Hogan or Cusack upper tier I'd definitely go with the Hill. I also think full lower tiers and a full hill would make for a much better atmosphere than full lower tiers and half empty upper tiers.
What could the reason for this be? Is it the GAA being greedy? Is it an attempt to reduce Steward numbers and costs? What the hell is going on????

I presume it is an attempt to reduce stewarding costs, hassle with residents etc.
However given that the ground will be fairly full on Sunday I think the Hill should be opened.

Its obviously a money thing.

I had initially assumed that it was expected that all these tickets would be hoovered up by the counties.

its a sad state of affairs when a double bill of All ireland semi-finals cannot sell out.

this is ridiculous, it's high time that some decisions were taken out of mckenna et al's hands - how can he justify making people pay an extra €20 to see a game?  If it's not going to be sold out why don't they offer the cheaper tickets in another section of the ground?  There's a sickening lack of empathy with supporters at present, additionally, I would have thought that sunday would see approx 60K there?

An empty hill also takes away from the atmosphere within the ground and looks odd on TV. You don't have this problem if there is even a small crowd on the hill.
Title: Re: Why are there no hill tickets for Sunday?

Given the credit crunch and general depression around in all sectors, would it not have been sensible to open up the hill rather than sell tickets that are in the clouds ??? Row Z in the Davin stand isn't a great place to watch a match from - the hill is a great place to be -

So € 45 for a bad seat - but €25 for a good place in the hill ?????

Doesn't mak sense to anyone other than the accountants !

2 senior all ireland semi finals and a minor one. If ye cant fill the stadium even then, ye have no place demanding the GAA spend more money opening sections of the ground that arent needed lads.

As a neutral I would be tempted to go for €25 but not for €45. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

No they dont, and I didnt say anything of the sort. All the teams playing on sunday are there 100% on merit. But it doesnt make sense to spend money to open a section of the ground that isnt needed.

then why not shut the Canal End, and free up the cheaper tickets on the Hill. Those who want the stands could go to the Cusack or Hogan.

Looking at the recent games not involving the Dubs, even when the hill was opened it was clear it was the least popular place for fans. That said, they could make the effort to bring the price down as there seems to be such a lack of interest in these games.

The big question should be why there is 2 all ireland senior and one minor semi finals together and they cant even fill 3/4 of the ground.

I'd say price is a significant factor to be honest. I'm not going to get into why the Cork, Kerry, Tyrone and Wexford lads won't travel in huge numbers, apparently, but for neutrals, the price is a factor. I've been to more hurling than football this year, and €20 or €15 onto the terrace at Semple Stadium was great value, as an example.

How much is the spend?  At least one poster has said he would go but at a min of €45 he's not going to bother, how many more people feel this way?  Maybe the cost of opening the hill would be covered by people who otherwise wouldn't bother going.  I have stood on the hill for many games that have been far from sold out, simply because it has been so much cheaper.
The other point I raised was that if it's simply to reduce costs, they should still have a section of the ground allocated for the 10-16K specatators who could otherwise go to the hill at the reduce rates that the hill normally commands - say upper cusack or somewhere, at least that way those cynics amongst us wouldn't have ammo to fire at them.

With all due respect, that's an entirely different topic. The fact is that it won't be full, so why not give people the option of standing for cheaper?

If you want to see thing pay € 45 seems to the answer.

Why are tickets in 306 middle of the field the same price as row z in 721 ???

I imagine that if the Hill is not in use then they don't have to close off some of the streets on the Summerhill end with a saving of Garda time etc. The Davin stand is entered from Jones Rd which is closed off in any case.

One reason may be that internal stewarding on the Hogan, Cusack and Davin Stands are done by volunteers while the Hill is stewarded mainly by Frontline Security

There do seem to be a fair few apologists for something which is nothing short of ripping off GAA supporters, there is no excuse for it.   If the hill was opened on Sunday the GAA would probably make €200k instead of €215k(sample figures), surely the association could take that hit, this is our own support not the soccer boys or egg chasers; there has to be a better balance between moneymaking and the ethos of the association.

Surely you agree the majority of people like to sit?
Surely you also agree that if the attendance is below 70,000 on Sunday all the tickets available  were not taken?
Surely you would also agree the atmosphere last week was greatly improved by closing sections of the ground and condensing the crowd ?

Thus the GAA took the decision to open the section of the ground which would be most peoples first choice .

It's all very well suggesting that it should be a sell out, but i'd imagine taking a family to Croker isn't easy for some people. 3 kids and you're into 200 euro before you look at petrol, food, programmes at 4 euros a pop. not alot of families have 300 euro kicking about these days. When you look at the number of qualifiers too it's no wonder people stay away.
It's obvious to us all that the GAA see the qualifiers and us as cash cows, and they're gonna milk every drop

So the GAA wish to raise revenue by charging into games, how strange.

Yous are in an all Ireland semi final, which many counties would love to be, yet 4 teams together cannot raise the same crowd as Armagh v Donegal did, one of the smaller counties versus one that is also far from Dublin.

As a Tyrone supporter Im just glad to be able to go and watch our minors and seniors play in the All Ireland Semi's. €45 might be dear enough but with 2 All Ireland semi's thrown in its not bad value. Considering many Tyrone "fans" havent been to a game all year they should be able to afford it. I take it those who said earlier that they would have went if the cheaper tickets were available are now going?

That really does my head in. This will be the third match I get to this year, and I would have been to them all if circumstances had been different, but when it comes to the final I know, like in the previous 2 times, I'll not be able to get a ticket while others who haven't went the entire year are able to.

Incidentally I think euro45 is great value for two senior all ireland semi finals and a minor one.

I would agree there your holiness, bargain of the year I'd say.

Yeah but €30 to watch it from the hill is great value too, that option should always be there.
