Title: Amazon Kindle
Post by: Ash Smoker on April 22, 2011, 12:08:51 PM
Does anyone have one of these and how do they find them to use?
I have looked on Amazon and it seems I have to buy it in from the USA, but then buy the books off amazon.co.uk
With all the postage charges and import tax, it starts to become expensive.

Is there a cheaper way of acquiring one?

There's a free PC version as well.

Thanks. I'm still in the dark ages having neither an iPhone or an Android.
I could get it on my pc, but that's hardly handy for carrying around.

How much are the books, and can you buy them in dollars from the States?

Yeah you can get books from amazon.com as well. Just click to buy and it automatically arrives onto your kindle in seconds.

I bought herself a barnes and noble "nook" by accident at christmas as the kindles were all gone. It appears to have gone down better than the kindle would have. I offered to exchange it for the kindle in the new year and she said having tried both of them she preferred the nook.

I think people are mad to spend this money on what is effectively technology gone backwards, In my day we had these so called kindles in the history class.  They were called Microfiche/ film readers at that time. You can pick up a second hand fiche or film reader for the £50 mark, to do exactly the same job, just make sure the bulb still works, or if you really dont want to read a book take up swimming.

For a pure reading experience the kindle is better. It uses e-ink, ie it is not backlit. So technically it is the same reading experience as print. You'd need the light on to read in bed. The new colour Nook and the iPad are backlit and after a while would burn the eyes out of your head. A lot of books are free on the Kindle, especially public domain books. So you can read a lot of the classics for free. I think the Irish Times is the only Irish newspaper available on the Kindle. The other great thing is no one knows what your reading because they can't see the cover so you don't have people in buses and trains looking at the cover of your book and trying to size you up based on what you are reading. I think it's a great device. It's also starting to do to book publishers what the the likes of iTunes did to the record companies. No harm. It and other devices like it however will also be the death of book shops, unfortunately.

Amazon have been killing book shops long before the Kindle came about.

The missus got me the wi-fi Kindle for my birthday last month and I've still to use it in anger. Still, I think it's a great piece of kit but I'll need to invest on one of the wee clip-on lights.

I have one and am becoming addicted to it ... will get a good run out on holiday. One thing though is that there are quite a few typos in the text - ie in hyphenated words and format. But will eventually become the thing to have when travelling and at home.

I hear you can jailbreak the Nook and turn it into a simple Linux tablet.

I think I'd prefer the Kindle though, I've tried using my iPhone as a book reader and the constant glare of the screen would put your head astray eventually.

I'd be all in favour of getting a Kindle but I might wait for the price to come down a bit more.

Look at the Sony reader in Waterstones or on line. Does the same job but isn't as bulky.

The kindle will accept many different file types (azw, mobi, lit, txt, doc, pdf)
I use Calibre which is an ebook organiser. It will also convert files into kindle-friendly ones.
pdfs are the only real challenge. The kiindle shows them no problem but you have to change the orientation to landscape in order to have the text be a comfortable size.

Lads I don't know a whole pile about it.

If someone was a big reader would they notice much difference, how do you turn the page and how is it on the eyesight? How is it for ease of use?

I've been using it solid since Christmas except for a few days when I read the Club. If easy on the eyes - there's no backlight and I find it reads just like a paper book. You turn the page by pressing a little button on the side (there's one on both sides).
It took me about 2-3 days to get used to it but now I don't even notice that it's not a real book.
Only downside is that if there are maps or glossaries or character lists, it's not easy to flick back and forth to them like it would be with a normal book.
If you are getting one I'd recommend that you buy the Kindle cover - essential for protecting the screen.

I got a cheap holder/cover from Amazon the other day, it doesn't cover the screen though. Do you need a "skin" for the cover?

The sony reader is dead handy, Ive had it on holidays and it can be read easy enough. it can take epub or pdf and these are readily available on the net. I know a man who even managed to get a load of books free. Not sure it was legit though. you turn the page either by the button at the bottom or by flicking it.

+1. I have about a hundred books on mine and even if you were travelling you won't be that far from wifi should you want to download a book.

Got the mother the new model for Christmas in the US for $79. Can't be bad til it.

I loaded mine from a cd of torrent files. From what I remember it's very easy - connect the Kindle to computer via supplied USB cable and transfer downloaded files (PDF, txt, doc and lit files) by drag and drop into Kindle file structure.

Books are finished. The kindle and look alikes will do do books what napster and all that followed have done to CDs.

I suspect amazon have canibalized their original core market now unless they intend to set up a spotify for books . Pirate bay/ utorrent, calibre software from download.com and you have an online library ..just need to cut and paste downloads to device.

I got my kindle last christmas. To be honest I have only bought 3 books from amazon via the Kindle since and I have not bought any paperbacks.

I (probably like others who post on here) have a large ebook library which has been shared among internet users.

Before I got my kindle I would have bought 1 book every 2 or 3 weeks. Now it is a lot less.

I now still wait for the latest (Lee Child, Stephen King, Cormac McCarthy) book to be issued.

Has the literary world become part of the internet age where only new works generate revenue and anything older than 6 months has been shared to such an extent that it is no longer financialy viable to publish it.

As far as I know it is essentially the same yoke is designed to travel so I would say it's fine. I bought the wi-fi only version in the States a couple of weeks ago and have registered it to an amazon.co.uk address.

There should be something covering your question here:

Have just bought my mother in law a kindle for Christmas. Is there anyway to get ebooks downloaded from torrent sites onto them or is it through the kindle itself?
I also have an iPad with the kindle app. Is it the same story with this?

Through the Kindle bookstore. Most of The Classics are free (as there is no longer any copy-write - I think) so if she was in to that sort of thing you could pre-load it with lots of books.

That's the problem though. She's more into her celebrity autobiographies, more recent books. Not very computer literate so was wondering how hard it would be to set up an amazon account. Is it a one click purchase type of set up to buy the books?

It still has a rapidly rising catalogue of books available in the bookstore. I use wifi and it downloads the books really quickly. The software is a little less intuitive than say iPad but for reading only it is far better. She will get the hang of it very quickly.

And yes you will need an Amazon account. But the books are cheaper as there are no publishing/printing/distribution costs.

the wife got me a kindle for Christmas and I have bought a few books from amazon already which downloaded easily.
However, is there another repository that I could purchase books from other than amazon - one that may be reasonable in book costs preferably...
TIA

Try mobilism.org, it's very reasonable - as reasonable as it gets.
