Irony overload.
An indian guy is walking down the street, he is surrounded by a gang of loyalists,
One asks:"Are you a fenian?"
Indian says: "I dont understand I am from Delhi?!"
They kick the shit out of him and say:
"It's Londonderry you fenian c**t!!"
:D
Historial? Yes. Cultural? I lived in it for a few years and can say no.
Aye a claiming culture !

I disagree with you, history and the historical events that have occurred in Derry over the years are inextricably linked to the Culture of the 6 counties for both communities and as such Derry can claim to have as much culture as anywhere else in the 6. If you are telling me Norwich or Birmingham are more deserving than Derry I would say rubbish.
Culture is such an ambiguous word nowadays anyway.

Imagine Grayson Perry dandering through Derry of a Saturday night! Broken ja's all round.
And 2013 is the 400th anniversary of the foundation of London Derry. ::)..before then, it was a pigsty.
istanbul is currently the European Capital Culture Can't really compare the two cities
Historial city indeed.
Couldn't help laughing at a report I heard earlier which mentioned "the benefits this would
bring to Derry".
Just as long as they don't allow Nadine Coyle to speak at the opening or closing ceremonies ;D
Downsides:
More crap songs from Phil Coulter
Gerry Anderson, Dana etc over exposed on all media.
John Hume canonised before death
Upside: it could have been Lisburn.

Derry, the town that gurned so well. The original self pity city before Liverpool stole their crown.
How much is this farce costing local rate payers?
The events of last night are sure to give the bid a boost ::)

Thats classic, i wonder how much ratepayers money has been wasted? If the UK part of it was an issue surely they could have flagged it up from the beginning and not wasted peoples time/effort/money.
Cllr McLaughlin was on Radio Ulster this evening doing some serious back-peddling. And as for this...

So is there such a thing in Derry City as a good GAA bar for a few pints b4 the match on sun?
Or decent bars of any kind near Celtic Park?
There are a couple very close to Celtic Park and we've always found them to be friendly, but they'll be bunged
Result due in just over half an hour - to be announed on The One Show (BBC1). Apparently Marty has made a trip to Liverpool for the result - supporting the bid for UK City of Culture. How times have changed.
Derry is the favourite apparently - many people expecting (rather than hoping) that they will win it. Would be a great boost for the city no doubt.
Good Luck to Legenderry.
can't be bothered sitting through half an hour of this without christine on it but frig it. goodluck derry!
Derry win!
Where did Londonderry finish?
BBC are not so saft, they said it would be announced at 7.00 on the One Show. Not 7.30 on the One Show, what a crap half hour that was.
Marty spent 40 years trying to blow Derry outta the UK and there he was celebrating it being part of the UK ... ???
Will this rule Derry out of the All Ireland Championship then?
Congratulations Londaindoire ;)

Marty is fcuked I tell ye!
Marty was speaking on Radio Ulster this morning and was asked how come he was accepting that Derry was in the UK. He quite rightly said that he was always going to seek a united Ireland and while he knows Derry is an Irish city, this is the jurisdiction he has currently agreed to be part of, and accepting this will in no way detract from the existing and historical Irish culture that Derry will exhibit during its tenure.
I was delighted to hear they had won, as someone said, it's a continuation of the feel-good factor post-Saville, and if anywhere needs a bit of attention, it's Derry. Hopefully it'll rub off on Strabane a wee bit. ;)

Fcuk me, more twists and turns from wee Marty there than a busted corkscrew!
Or, as someone pointed out when surveying the possible list of events which we may see during the year, they'll have gone the full 180 degrees from "Brits Out" to "The Brits"...
You couldn't make it up - except they already have!

A three week old yoghurt has more "culture" than Strabane (but doesn't smell so bad)...
A lot of 'loyalists' are apoplectic about McGuinness and Derry as the only culture they are interested in promoting is a culture of bigotry and intimidation.
Some toolbags on the radio today, the 'loyalist' community are well represented as normal :D
I studied in Derry, so I have a soft spot for the place and I reckon this will bring plenty of buzz to the city and a face lift will surely get the heart beat of the city pumping a little bit stronger. This city of culture award has done wonders for Liverpool.

I think this is the first time I have ever agreed with a word you said
Money talks. It seems most people have a price.
Having said that, for the benefit of the people of Derry, I think he's right to support the bid and the outcome. Although maybe he didn't have to push himself so far into the limelight.

That was the european city of culture and came with additonal funding from the government to host it, this is only the UK city of culture and no extra money grants or funding it winging its way to derry, they'll have to go it alone on the finance.
Aye people seem to be missing that point Delboy, any "regeneration" of Derry will be down to the private sector in the area as there is no government funding. Martys brothers security firm may get a few gigs out of it though..........

Ziggy is the man. Sandinos venue on Foyle St and the wee bar around the corner
The Gweedore is a great spot for music and stout. Live rock covers bands downstairs and the disco bar upstairs you seek will be great craic. Masons just up the hill from the Gweedore is also good for craic agus music
