Laois / Re: Underage squads 2024

Laois have a good man at the top in Shane Keegan. It's up to the clubs and schools to be feeding players into the underage teams otherwise it doesn't matter who is over them. Clubs should be encouraging volunteers in and then upskilling them as coaches. More GDOs are getting rolled out and more are required and needed to liase more with the schools.

What are numbers like at the clubs at an underage level? What's the standard like?

Spoke recently to 2 fathers on a night out with 2 minor sons

One hurling in laois

One in kilkenny

Between schools and club hurling

The minor in Kilkenny is doing 5 times the hours of hurling that the kid in laois is doing between schools and club hurling training and games

This figure doesn't include the hours they do on their own which the kid in KK is probably doing a lot more of or the quality of training and games which both are getting

Galway down to 14 men against the Dubs. It has really changed the course of the game with Dublin coming back into it.

Plus they'll be against the wind in 2nd half.

A red card for me. Reckless when ball was gone.

You might be right. Me I am not sure about it. The thing about it is though Burke didn't have to make the hit. He deliberately laid the man out and left the ref with a decision to make. The ref didn't have the benefit of slow motion replays and after consulting with the linesman Burke was gone.

It cost Galway the game and possibly Henry his job

It was a needless challenge, silly even, especially when the ball was gone. Some will say a red, others will say  yellow but it's not the reason they lost.

They were very poor V Antrim. Antrim's sending-off made Galway look good at the start of the 2nd half.  Wexford beat them and then the earlier draw with Kilkenny.

Consistently inconsistent!

Ironically it was M'OD that put them to the sword today. He was the last manager to get a tune out of that Galway squad. When you see big Johnny Glynn coming off the bench, it's not saying much for their bench/squad.

Henry's career has stalled a bit because of this period.  I'm sure they looked an attractive proposition from the outside but he hasn't progressed them, for whatever reason. I think they need a clear out and a rebuild is needed.

Whether it's him or not, time will tell.

That 5 out 8 finals for Derry in 10yrs and a semi final with a losing Ulster final team few yrs bck. Good going at underage. Need Start a big focus on the U20 level and let them play their level. We let a couple finals go past few yrs.

Heard a few ones say that Derry treat the U20 grade as a development one.

Play players that are more likely to make the step up to senior in the future ie. The best players just out of minor rather than the all 19 and 20 year olds.

Not sure if any truth to it.

If I were Meath County board I'd be going all out for Malachy O'Rourke.

He could transform that team if given time.

He'll be over Derry next year I'd say.

You could be right especially if they go out in a Preliminary quarter final.

The Derry job was always a tough one to take on after RG.

A team playing very close to full potential.

In contrast to the Donegal job.

If I were Meath County board I'd be going all out for Malachy O'Rourke.

He could transform that team if given time.

He'll be over Derry next year I'd say.

Antrim / Re: Antrim Hurling

Antrim's target is to win 1 game in Leinster and stay in the Leinster Chapionship the following year.

That's success for Antrim.

What are Dublin doing that we need to do?

Dublin should be what we are looking to get to

Antrim are miles off Dublin.

Firstly, Dublin have a huge no. of clubs and players etc.

Secondly, Dublin this year are/will be in 3 Leinster Finals - Minor, U20 and Senior.

Would Meath not get their U20 manager on board?

They need a rebuild with that minor and now that U20 squad.

O'Bric should be involved in any set up but I think we need a proven senior county coach. O'Bric can take the senior role eventually.

Malachy might be an option but I would also look in Dublin as well for a manager and coaches. Someone who has been involved with Jim Gavin. 

I'd go for obric and Brennan as joint managers.  New fresh and know what is needed. They have a huge rebuild to do. Colm has brought us to the lowest level I can remember, we went from 25k expenses under Andy to 125k under Colm in one year. To do what ? Lose our seeding in Leinster, get beat by Offaly not qualify for all ire first year. Yea we won tc beating div 3/4 teams. Lucky v Antrim and Down. But we got there. Again this year no improvement in league and now another disaster in championship. Colm is not a senior manager Latin phrases won't put the ball over the bar. I'd like to see a statement from Meath cb saying that at end of campaign we wil be moving forward with a new appointment
