GAA Discussion / Re: Casement Park in line for ...

Heaton-Harris not running for re-election and a general election around the corner.

Can't shake the feeling the current plan is to leave it in the in-tray for Labour to deal with.

QuoteDoubts cast over Casement Park being ready for Euro 2028
GAA president Jarlath Burns has called on Chris Heaton-Harris to "make good" on his assurances last year that the money would be found for the stadium.

Delays in the British government's commitment to the rebuild of Casement Park have cast doubt over the stadium being ready to host Euro 2028 games.

At Saturday's GAA Central Council meeting, director general Tom Ryan relayed to delegates that there was no update from London about how much they are prepared to contribute to the reconstruction.

In the context of the imminent deadlines that have to be met for the Belfast stadium to be a venue for the competition, there is growing concern in the GAA that the British government will not deliver on assurances given last year.

The stadium's listing as a Euro 2028 venue is considered integral to the additional funding that had been assured by the UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Chris Heaton-Harris.

GAA president Jarlath Burns has called on Heaton-Harris to "make good" on his assurances last year that the money would be found for the stadium. However, the minister has baulked at the possibility the final bill for the reconstruction could exceed £308 million (€360.35m).

That figure has been disputed on the GAA side but as the Irish Examiner reported last month, the cost could be amplified by the discovery of waste materials on the Andersonstown Road grounds.

The Stormont Executive's original contribution in 2011 was £62.5m (€73.12m), while the Government in February announced a commitment of €50m (£42.74m). The GAA has refused to increase its original £15m (€17.55m). Another £13m (€15.21m) was recently committed to Casement Park from Stormont as an "executive flagship project".

Earlier this month, First Minister Michelle O'Neill insisted the stadium would be built in time for the Euros in June 2028.

"Hosting the 2028 European Championship in a world-class Casement Park presents our island and economy with an unprecedented opportunity, and it's going to be an enormous opportunity, and it's going to be a fantastic investment, and we are going to build Casement Park."

Quote from: galwayman on May 20, 2024, 11:36:52 PMJust wondering has anyone on here been to both the Austrian and Swiss Alps in the summer and able to compare them?
Have a week to take off work in early July and now thinking of trying to get a sneaky week away - but don't want the usual Med resort type break.
I was looking at Zell am See and Seefeld in Austria initially, but also looking at Morzine (mainly due to the free outdoor public heated pool) and Annecy in France.
I'm going research blind now though so am secondf guessing myself!
We've been away already earlier in the year, so trying to keep this as cheap as possible (so probably won't be able to stump up for accommodation with a pool for the kids).
Just looking for somewhere scenic with some swimming possibilities for the kid within walking distance of a reasonable choice of restaurants.
Anyone been to the areas mentioned?
Have been to Zell Am See a few times in the summer, lovely spot, don't need pool as there is an open air pool by the lake and can also swim in the lake which is class. Haven't been in 10 years or so but hope to go back soon. Moraine I haven't been to but it's on my bucket list

Pretty sure Rois and seafoid have commented on that area previously if you can get the search function to work!

Didn't they bate Dublin in the Group stage as well?

They did last month, which was Longfords first U17/U18 win against Dublin for 22 years.

Quote from: ranch on May 19, 2024, 10:23:19 PMBy all means have them playing league football. There should be a proper reserve championship to accommodate them however. As much as the CE lads would have enjoyed winning a junior championship last year, there was hardly a celebration out of them after they beat Ballyhegan.

As for this year, St Peter's seconds are doing well, only lost one game to league favourites Corrinshego early in the season. Come championship you'd imagine that Forkhill and Middletown would be the favourites if they're at full strength.
That St Peters team will be hard stopped. Yeah probably a tiered league competition for seconds and reserve teams would be best.

Yeah they'll be one of the favourites along with Forkhill, Middletown and Ballyhegan. Corrinshego have beaten them already this year and were semi finalists last year so they'll be up there you'd imagine. Playing in the lower division won't benefit  Corrinshego and St. Peters though.

On your second point, I'm all for seconds teams competing in the league system, if anything I'd be encouraging more clubs to do it. But we need to have a properly organised reserve championship that is running at the same time as the other championships  for them to take part in.

I get the points on seconds playing in the lower championships being unfair on other clubs, but if it's graded and policed properly then the lads on those seconds, that's their level and being associated to a senior club without a huge opportunity of getting on the senior squad then they are being denied an opportunity to win a recognised all county trophy.

You end up in a situation where you have seconds teams winning a junior championship but they can't go on to play in the provincial series - surely that opportunity is also being denied to them in that case.
The key point you make is that it needs to be policed properly - a good idea in theory but the reality is much different. A reserve championship that's played at the same time as the other championships would be my preference. I'd also remove the link between leagues and championships and encourage clubs to enter reserve teams in the league system if they have the numbers to do so.

Considering the resources in both counties that is a great victory for Longford

Bit disappointed to be honest, it's a subject that could have done better.
