As the immortal Roy Walker would say: "It's Good, but it's not Right". Dennis Compton was an outstanding cricketer for Middlesex and England and almost as good a footballer (for Arsenal). His brother Leslie was also pretty useful in both sports (same teams), though not so accomplished. Both played for Arsenal in the 1950 Cup Final, but the late Joe Mercer was Captain that day:

Keep trying; it's not a trick question, btw, but the answer will surprise you!

I think you are talking about Noel Cantwell who captained Manchester Utd., when they won the FA Cup in 1963 and played Soccer (obviously) and Cricket for Ireland.

I had never heard of him.

Dennis Compton was one of the greats of English cricket but I must confess, I hadn't realised he was quite so good a footballer. For as well as the 1950 FA Cup winners medal, he also won the League with Arsenal two years earlier. Moreover, his football career was disrupted by both the War and injury, though he was good enough to play football for England in wartime internationals (not recognised as official caps).

His brother Leslie was also no slouch at either game, but was always overshadowed somewhat by "The Brylcreem Boy". He never quite played cricket for England (he represented the MCC, however), but he was probably the better footballer of the two, gaining two (regular) caps for England at football, including making his debut at 38 years old (a post-war record)!

Anyhow, when I said that the answer would be a surprise (above), this is actually for two reasons, one of which being that it is since the Comptons. (I'll not reveal the other surprising aspect just yet  ;))

That's the one! He must also win a prize for being the only FA Cup Winner with the middle names "Eucharia Cornelius"
