I was wondering how many places have the same name in Ireland and where they all are? Also, what is the most popular place name in Ireland?

For instance I live in Greencastle, but there is four Greencastles in Ireland. Interestingly enough, all in Ulster.

Greencastle, Co. Donegal
Greencastle, Co. Antrim
Greencastle, Co. Down
Greencastle, Co. Tyrone

In Mayo it would be something like Ballyglass  (probably due to a 'green' 'town' being a big swing in a county of generally poor land) or Shraheens (little river islets)

Best i can do Ziggy is Dooish my townland in Tyrone and Dooish a townland in Donegal.

God bless the hills of Dooish, be they heather-clad or lea,

Ballybeg seems quite popular, if you are to believe Wikipedia, with five instances - althoiugh "a small road between Portglenone . . .  and Ahoghill" seems to be a stretch

Ballina, Co.Tipperary
Ballina, New South Wales, Australia

Hollow Man

Ballinagh in Cavan (Ulster IFC champions).

Pronounced Ballin-ya

One of the most popular would be Knockmore I'd say or Glasdrummond seems popular in Cavan for some reason

Kill is very popular

I heard ...... Tandragee means 'Arse against the wind' ... while Ballyhackamore in east Belfast means 'Town of the big dung' ... while Larne is Irish for 'Pack of Wa**ers' any comments?

Opps, I didn't research this one very hard. I think the most popular place name in Ireland is Newcastle.

Name them:

I'll give you one for starters:  Shinshiro City, Aichi-ken, Japan where I used to work.  Literally means "New castle"

Newtown and Newcastle are strong candidates OK. The wiki list of Newtowns in Ireland above is too small by an order of magnitude at least, when you go down to townland names. There are at least four in Meath alone, in one of which I was born.

The Parliamentary Gazetteer of Ireland, 1844 lists 18 Newtowns and 15 Newcastles and it only goes down to parish or "hamlet" level - doesn't include townlands.

Theres a Durrow in Laois and Offaly.
2 Balrotherys in Dublin, one near Tallaght, one near Balbriggan.
Blackrock is in Dublin and Louth, I'd guess maybe elsewhere too?

2 Donores too, I think.

Summerhill in Dublin and Meath.

Theres a Ballinderry in Tyrone and one in Antrim.  Newbridge is another to rival Newcastle and Newtown.
