IRISH backpackers Colm Sherry and Fergal Arkinson shared their Albert Park apartment with a complete stranger for six months without realising.

It was only when they were moving out that they discovered the ashes of Paul Jervis Kells, who died 23 years ago, sitting on a shelf in Mr Arkinson's bedroom cupboard.

Bizarrely, according to the inscription, the man had died on June 22 — the very day the Irishmen were to move out of the building.

"It was a strange enough discovery without finding out he died on the same day we were leaving," Mr Arkinson said.

"It was on the very top shelf of the wardrobe, right at the back, which is why I didn't find it before then.


"I needed the ladder to reach it. I'm glad I didn't find it earlier because I am a bit superstitious."

Mr Sherry said: "We thought it was just the two of us living there but it had actually been three and we just didn't realise it."

He joked that the discovery explained "all the strange happenings''.

The friends, who are now on a road trip to Queensland before jetting home to Ireland, say they hope their real estate agent will be able to reunite the ashes with the man's loved ones.

"That would be the best outcome," Mr Sherry said.

"No one would leave those behind on purpose."

There is a Youtube/Facebook prank video which involves people wearing scarey masks jumping out in front of people.

That's all fine and dandy but in one instance a person (perhaps a father) jumps out in front of a 3 or 4 year old girl. That person needs a seriously good kicking.
