I thought one of Trump's promises during the election was that he wouldn't get involved in foreign affairs.

That one of the reasons is that  they wouldn't accept back people sent  back by USA.  And they have loads of oil. The conflict just seemed to erupt. WTF?

Trump uses Venezuela as a media enemy to feed to the MAGA faithful.
The drugs come from Mexico and Colombia, not Venezuela.

Think you've answered  your own question there.

Oil and Marco Rubio pushing it for his Miami ex-pat pals. I'm sure there's tonnes of money to be made after installing a "sympathetic" government who'll be no better for the regular people than Maduro.

It ain't drugs, obviously.

Trump has no inter-agency policy process. His "administration" consists of loyalists competing with each other to be more Trumpian than the next. This works when they know what Trump wants. Sometimes they guess wrongly. In July Hegseth halted US weapons shipments to Ukraine only to discover that Trump did not yet want that. He suffered a humiliating reversal. Since then Hegseth has been falling over himself to please Trump, including ordering four televised strikes on unidentified Venezuelan boats. Trump is so pleased with the optics of these apparently risk-free fireworks that he seems to be developing a taste for them. The danger is that Trump also sees escalation as a freebie. Maduro is a vile strongman and a client of both Russia and China. Few Venezuelans would mourn his demise. Yet they would fight against Yankee imperialism. That Trump's "maximum pressure" on Venezuela drives up its huge outflow of migrants, including to America, is one of those ironies. Trump is fuelling the problem he claims to be tackling. This only makes sense if he is less than truthful about his true aim. The movie Wag the Dog depicted a US administration concocting a fake war to distract from domestic woes. Trump's twist on that plot is to stage the fake war at home while lining up a foreign country for a co-starring role.

They've a pile of oil and Trump needs a distraction from him raping children with Epstein.

The USA's motivation is obviously as pure as the driven snow but Maduro is a crook, occupying the President's office after a widely accepted (but disputed by him) electoral defeat. Simon Reeves trip through South America (Venezuela episode) was on there recently, it's on the BBC Iplayer, well worth a watch

No doubt, but Trump could not care less about either that or the drugs. He literally just pardoned Juan Hernandez, former president of Honduras, a year into a 45 year prison sentence for trafficking huge quantities of cocaine into the US. Perhaps Maduro can channel some of his country's wealth into Trump's crypto schemes and get into his good books along with such noble national leaders like Putin, Kim Jung Un and MBS.
