Would've got some some odds predicting the lineup for this ulster championship

Dunloy v Newbridge

Kingscourt v Erne Gaels
Loughmacrory v Kilcoo
Scotstown v Glenties
Madden v Dunloy/Newbridge

Winner of Scotstown/Glenties for me.

Not so sure about that. For me, Newbridge would take both of these teams and would have them as my tip for Ulster. Scotstown from a few years ago, maybe not.

It's a  pity Carryduff didn't win in Down. It would have made for a  very interesting Ulster series. Hopefully Kilcoo go out  early anyway , and  we will see a new winner.

Kilcoo have won 13 out of the last 14 in Down. Such dominance must effect the crowds in Down?

How many of them would have been favourites in their counties at the the start? Kilcoo and Scotstown?

That Newbridge side might do a bit in Ulster? (Although Clann Eireann beat them last year and Madden dominated Clann Eireann in Armagh.) Can't be easy winning back to back in Derry.

Madden have serious quality- young McMullan fast becoming a top, top drawer player but they'll rightly celebrate this fairly hard so who knows, obviously history would say first time winners don't usually go far in the province.

I think they'll be a good bit better this year in Ulster. Last year was their first Derry championship in a long time, with 10 starters under 20. Padraig McGrogan is back to full fitness now. That said, they're still a very young team so consistency is far from guaranteed.

Madden have a bit of time to get the celebrations done and dusted. When will their game be?

edit: 2 weeks time. They should have sobered up by then

gallsman

Kilcoo are the clear and obvious favourites. That doesn't mean they'll win.

Armagh18

What shape are Scotstown in? Is there another push in them?

Good to see new teams come through. I think it's hard for a fist time county winner to come through Ulster.

Especially with the celebrations etc. it's hard to get refocussed again. Not impossible but a bit harder. So in that respct, I'd be lokkinging at the Kilcoos and Newbridge's etc. They have a bit of experience.

One other thing is that it's winter football from now on. That plays a huge part in these games.

I always remember the great Crossmaglen team. Fantastic team who they were battle haredened for the winter. Not saying they wouldn't have won them games in summer but they knew how to play winter football.

But again, form will count for nothing. It's all on the day and who make the better decisions on the ball in the last 10 mins will win the games....for the most part.

newbridge have played one ulster club game in the last 35 years, hardly experienced.

Last years brief experience should be a benefit to them this yesr though.

Madden aren't soft, they'd have more physicality for an Ulster Club campaign than Cullyhanna would have done IMO. They'll give Newbridge a game that's for sure and with it being in the Athletic Grounds who knows, but you'd probably have to fancy Newbridge (assuming Dunloy don't pull off a huge shock).

If i was betting I'd probably back Scotstown but who knows, the likes of Loughmacrory have so much talent they could chin anyone. It's winter football but they'll be in best available Grounds.
