Quote from: maldini on January 05, 2026, 10:05:54 PMYesterday was the first time I've heard of this "tolerance level" of 5cm that you're allowed to be offside now. They used it to explain why the Wirtz goal stood. Apparently it's only in the premier league and the goal would be offside in other leagues.

Firstly he looked more than 5cm off and secondly, why have they used it here but not in other incidents this season were goals have been ruled out for an armpit or toe being mere millimeters off?

1) The frame chosen by VAR (the correct frame) showed him within 5cm. The TV coverage used the following frame (incorrectly) where yes he appeared more than 5cm.
The actual frame is available online and shows Wirtz is clearly onside. The TV cameras have a frame rate half that of the VAR cameras, hence the discrepancy.

2) The fact that it would be offside in other leagues is completely irrelevant. Would have been a forward pass in rugby too.

With my engineering head on me I always wondered what tolerances were possible with VAR technology and +/- 5cm isn't bad.

It was that tight the attacking team should get the advantage.

Just be consistent

For everyone else, the bootlace offside rule has always applied.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how raging are you?

Unreal isnt it. Getting on the merry-go-round fairly sets you up for life.  I read Amorim is away on his winter holidays with a £10m payout.

Got sacked by Forest after getting beat by West Ham and could now get sacked by West Ham after getting beat by Forest in the same season

Look-Up!

Bigger problems at the club than Nuno. They're goosed no matter who they bring in to replace. New signings are the only fix but they have only one player worth selling. They've already tried the managerial bounce this season to no avail and he's a good manager.

Players are slow in vital areas and they know it and their confidence is shot as a result. A new manager won't make them run faster. Maybe a Big Sam type could make them hard to beat for 5 months but at this stage draws won't do them.

When big clubs like Utd overspend on players who don't perform and offer no resale value they drop out of the CL. When lower level clubs do it they drop into championship. But if they all have relegation clauses in their contracts they can recover pretty quickly.

Armamike

Never understand why clubs who sell their best players or recruit badly or hardly at all, think the manager is the problem. Wolves and West Ham are where they are at because they haven't signed or kept enough good players. Bournemouth possibly going the same way unless they're careful.
That's just, like your opinion man.

The new Chelsea manager was given a five and half year contract but how long will he actually last?

Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

A quick scan of the history books shows that the most successful Premier League managers are Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola, and Jürgen Klopp — all of whom were given time to do their jobs and develop their teams.

And yes, this is still a GAA column, because the exact same premise is true in the world of Gaelic football, and I can only hope that our sport never becomes as obsessed with quick fixes and instant gratification as those in professional sports.

The last four years alone are proof that when you give good Gaelic football managers time, they will get results.

In 2022, Jack O'Connor won the All-Ireland with Kerry, in what was his third stint in charge of the team.

Dublin manager Dessie Farrell celebrates after the 2023 All-Ireland Final

In 2023, Dessie Farrell guided Dublin to the Sam Maguire title, having been in charge the previous three seasons.

In 2024, Kieran McGeeney — the longest-serving manager in the game right now — led Armagh to the top of the table, and last year O'Connor brought the Kingdom back to glory to claim his fifth All-Ireland title.

There is something wrong with clubs giving out long contracts! Is that the only way to get these guys? Who is wagging who's tail here?
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Bosman changed everything in that regard.

Apparently he's been told if he doesn't get CL football it's the boot at the end of the year. Would you even bother trying? Sit on your arse until May and get a massive payout. Madness
