Is right.

It felt like Glenullin's management watched a video of Scotstown beating Kilcoo and decided "this is the way" without factoring in wind direction, a kickout plan, or having any form of a plan B.

Quote from: JPO on January 12, 2026, 06:46:31 PMGlenullin  werent really playing Gaelic football yesterday. They should install dartboards in their clubrooms and try that as a sport instead. Kerry  teams generally do play football so they do tend to win matches.

And you think what An Ghaeltacht did yesterday was playing football? Certainly not the envision of the FRC fronted by our saviour Jim Gavin.

Must have been a record for the amount of hand passing in a 60th minute All-Ireland final from a winning team however they chose that way to win than entertain and won't care one bit now.

The tactics was a clear response to them playing more football in the semi final against Kildare opposition and nearly getting beat, plus would have known about the scoring power Glenullin had coming into that final and the best way to stop that was to retain possession with long boring passages of play.
Sure why would they not keep possession? They're in Croker for one reason and thats to get the win by any means necessary.

Agreed.
Gaeltacht would have been naive fools to kick the ball in to players who were double and triple marked.
Instead Glenullin were the ones who looked like fools, behind in the game from early on and then just sticking to their rigid defensive system, giving Gaeltacht easy possession and only breaking free of the shackles at the end when it was too late.

A win for Glenullin would have seen many copycat defensive systems, so thankfully they lost.

Most teams are programmed to sit back and not engage and after watching
Gaeltacht tactics on Sunday that proved successful you'll see many more copycats of long sustained periods of possession play.  FRC has already adjusted the hooter for the year ahead to prevent the boring passages of play with teams playing down the clock if the copycats happen I'll expect the FRC will look at restrictions on hand passes or a shot clock introduced.
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

This is simple,
An Gaeltacht were in front.
Glenullin were behind and should have been pro active in trying to get the ball back.

Instead they sat back inside their 45m line and hoped that An Gaeltacht would be stupid and carry the ball into trouble.

This is 100% the fault of the team who are behind. They must step up and try to win the ball back.

The alternative is to let your opponents run the clock down which is madness

100% agree. Common sense would tell you that if you're leading, the opponent can't score without the ball so you should avoid giving it to them as much as possible.

But we're after completely tearing up the rules because it was damaging the spectacle. The new spectacle isn't much better either so if that's the rational we probably need to have a good rethink of it.

Teams retaining possession is incredibly boring so what are we going to do about it? People said mass defences were boring and the rules were changed.

It hasn't actually achieved much bar the 2 point rule which doubles a score if it was taken an inch outside the line a 1 point score is taken.

Easier said than done to be pro active in trying to get the ball back when teams are coached to a inch of their lives to sit back and wait to pounce on a mistake or wayward kick pass.

I don't blame Gaeltacht for playing the way they did but their tactics along with Glenullin not engaging made it a truly shocking watch and after watching both previously that game had the potential to be a classic final.

It's a mindset. Glenullin were playing like they were afraid to push out and leave space in behind.

The only way to stop teams from keeping 'easy' possession is to step up and tackle.

Especially if you are behind.

If Glenullin had of been more aggressive without the ball, it would have been a much better spectacle for spectators.

An Gaeltacht just reacted to what was unfolding in front of them.
