Truth hurts

Derry GAA were given permission at Saturday's Central Council meeting to lease their Centre of Excellence facilities at Owenbeg to Derry City FC on a temporary basis while the League of Ireland side completes development work over the next two years.

What are your thoughts on this? I believe soccer clubs will start going after GAA grounds in towns and villages in Ireland ?

GTP

Would most clubs not be fully booked on pitches with training and matches for Gaelic games without adding the local soccer team in?
Owenbeg is going to be used during the day at times when little GAA activity, can't see it doing any harm or setting a precedent.

Great idea by Derry GAA.  Especially during the day. Top class facilities 30 mins out the road.

I wonder how much they're getting for it?

I think it's an absolute disgrace, them soccer fcuks should be... Only messing, great idea that benefits both parties

From another poster on the Derry thread:
From what I've heard it's £100k deal for use of all facilities but during the day only

Sure what about it...helping your buddies across the Foyle, would be rude not too.
I can swim a little but i can't fly an inch

As long as we get a few pound for it. Could help bring on the townie teams when the local kids see the soccer club having to avail of the excellent facilities at owenbeg to go along with all the new pitches and clubroom the town teams have acquired in the last few years

SaffronSports

Good deal for Derry. As said above 100k for use when it's generally sat empty at that time of day isn't bad plus if they keep on the sweet side of Philip O'Doherty then they might get something out of that relationship down the line.

Rossfan

Good bit of business for Derry CB.
No doubt they'll find good uses for the rent money!
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

It's a no brainer...

"start going after GAA grounds?"

What does that mean? They can't "go after" them when they don't own them surely it's up to each Club/County to do with their grounds as they see fit!

Rule 42 is now meaningless when it can be overridden so easily.

Rule 42 was modified a few years back over the Liam Miller fundraiser in Pairc Ui Chaoimh that all requests have to be approved by Central council.

Kingspan Breffni have also availed of this change to host Ulster Rugby and Mayo will host Connacht soon I believe.

It's hardly overridden easily and anyone who has been involved in grant applications in the north will know that the small print means that the facilities need to be available to all sections of the community.
You don't get one brass farthing unless you sign up to that.
