Quote from: Mario on June 22, 2024, 09:43:36 PMHoping for Donegal. I think we'll take them in Croke park.

It's the best draw but that was a huge shift with a light panel I can't see us beating anyone next week!

Good chance Loughlin is back next weekend. Bench including Toner, Mulholland, Gilmore, Loughlin, Murphy. A week of r 'n r, rub out the aches, a session on Kilrea lake, ice cream in Mullans after.

Over the moon for the players and management. Been a stressful couple of months for all of them. It's teams like Mayo that make the AI series what it is. They've given serious entertainment down the years.
Who knows what the draw will bring, but it's great to be heading back to Croke Pk to compete? Tbh I'd take any of the 3 we could potentially play except Dublin and Kerry... God speed

those problems aren't gone anywhere. they pulled it out of the bag today as a matter of pride, but they will be beaten comprehensively next weekend. mayo were never going to be the team to put them away.

Mayo were hot favourites this evening against Derry and a harder draw than Monaghan....Roscommon...and Louth...

Great stuff...

said it at the beginning of the week that it was the ideal draw for derry. the perfect game for them to retain dignity. mayo are flaky as f**k and they were visibly dejected after drawing with dublin. they put so much energy, mentally and physically, into winning that match and came up short. they were always gonna be there for the taking this week and the longer they left derry in it, the more likely it was that derry would win. derry will be facing the same dilemma as mayo next weekend - they spent so much energy winning today. they'll be bet next weekend.

Right away and dry your hole n let us enjoy the night FFS! The grim.

enjoy it!!! i've no horse in the race. just calling it as i see it. wouldn't mind seeing derry win the competition outright, would be a great story after all the whispers and supposed drama we've been hearing about

Or capitals.. Reminds me of another great poster on here from a wee while back

Quote from: yellowcard on June 22, 2024, 11:43:51 PMThat was a pure bottle job from Mayo. Playing at home against a team bereft of confidence, that was an awful way to finish the season. Playing that way Derry will go no further.

Yes, never a truer statement - Imagine losing to this Derry team on penalties. And Mayo riding on the crest of a wave after their fabulous draw against Dublin the week before that meant diddly squat. Complete Bottlers and should I add Flaky.

Never thought that day would happen. Now, twice.

No Tyrone man worth his salt supports  Derry. You're the kind of guy that has a half and half jersey.

hardly riding on the crest of a wave. they were visibly devastated after drawing that match. that's why it was set up perfectly for derry.

Fair play to Derry written off in alot of quarters and showed great bottle to get late equaliser. If Armagh are England on penalties Derry must be Germany!

Incredible result for Derry, well done to the players and management. My tupppence worth on the Mayo penalty for a footblock. The referee surely made a bad mistake on this one as the ball doesn't hit Mckinless on the foot. It hits him high up on the back of his leg. Surely for a footblock the ball has to be blocked by the foot. Also the ref came in and booked Lynch which shows that he didn't have a clear view of what happened and therefore he should have consulted his umpires.

A real back to basics performance from Derry, it was early Gallagher era all over it. The work rate and support play was back and everybody emptied the tank. We'll probably need more going forward to progress to the next stage, but it has to be a huge confidence builder for the team.

Much improved performances from a number of players who've come in for criticism recently, I thought Rodgers, mckaigue and Cassidy all contributed hugely again. Others like McEvoy, the Dohertys, Glass and mckinless were key to the win.
One thing we'll definitely have to change for next week is the reluctance to shoot, time after time we had opportunities to take a shot, but chose to recycle and frequently ended up being turned over, looks like a confidence issue more than anything.

Was baffled by many refereeing decisions, the 'foot' block with a thigh and yellow card was clearly wrong, but there were many calls where you could see players unsure which way a free was going to go after the whistle went. Poor McKinless never stood a chance of winning a free - Cawley correctly spotted his propensity for winning frees in the 2022 semi, but now won't give him a free for love nor money! (Incidentally, there was an actual foot block in that semi which he didn't give for Derry).
He also seemed to play advantage for Derry a couple of times when it never looked advantageous and players were turned over very quickly with no call back - I know 5 secs is short, but these never looked like situations that were going to improve.

I've no problem with the short gap between games, people talk about lack of jeopardy, surely that is the jeopardy and the longer this structure is in place, the more apparent this becomes.

Great back to the walls performance by Derry, huge intensity and an enthralling watch, both teams had their chances to close it out and you've got to feel for mayo fans once again.

Definately wasn't a penalty but in fairness, it was hard for any of us to see in real time. We had the benefit of the replay a few times to clarify it.

Officials don't have that.  Re: the booking, Lynch was coming out also and referee probably thought it was his leg/foot.

As I say, very hard to see in real time.

The first impulse of a referee should not be to give frees on what he thinks he didn't see, but to referee the game on what he does see.
He refereed that game with an obvious bias.
