Quote from: square_ball on June 17, 2024, 07:42:33 AMEngland have the strongest squad in the tournament for me. They're the only team expected to give a 10/10 performance every game by their supporters, media and detractors. Anything less than that is a disaster.

Too many square pegs in round holes to really give it a go.

A right fullback at left back is the most obvious one, playing Trent in midfield last night kinda proved Klopp right in that regard, maybe his concentration levels just aren't there and Foden out left didn't work as he wants to come inside all the time.
Kane was pish,, 2 touches of the ball the whole first half which England absolutely dominated, can't make the runs in behind and is at his best attacking crosses coming in from out wide which is currently only coming in from one side.

If Southgate had a set of swingers Foden would be dropped for Gordon and TAA dropped for Mainoo. I'd persist with Sakha over Dani Dyers boyfriend as England need pace up front if they persist with Kane as he's un-droppable allegedly.

In Kane's defence, he was playing as an out-and-out striker with no support.  Only chance he got was when he hit the bar - cross in was excellent from Bowen and keeper made an excellent save.

True, England are jigging things about to suit certain players and that may be their downfall later on in the tournament.

They'll be happy with the win, 3pts and a clean sheet.

England are effectively playing with no left side, and will be found out plus some when they meet a balanced side.

Southgate has been there a decade or so. This is entirely on him.

That's the point about Kane, in the first half England must have had 70%+ possession and he didn't really touch the ball, so if he'd no support then how the hell is he going to do anything against the better teams when England won't have so much ball and need a willing runner down the channels to get them up the field.

Kane's best days are behind him and he's potentially holding this England team back, not complaining though  ;D

There's got to be a format tweak similar to the arduous GAA championship that could be introduced to prolong England's agony, something convoluted that keeps them treading water against workmanlike teams for a good month before elimination, if they keep this up it could reach levels not seen since well whoever the last gaffer was

On a side note, wouldn't be a supporter of the Republic or the norf but thank feck neither qualified as they'd get the most almighty hidings from most teams in the competition nevermind the big guns

I think Kane would be ok if right system played. He doesn't know how to play Kane, a left back, TAA or Phil Foden. The manager doesn't really know what he's at. (which is good because there are some very good players there).

The players have to shoulder some responsibility for their output too especially basic errors and general passive shiteness

It's international football and it's Southgate, so it is going to be generally conservative and no risk taking.

Any one else finding Bellingham hard to watch, with the throwing himself about and the moaning.

Unreal talent but was finding this with Real last season too, hard to watch.

Could you imagine the English media had they beaten Croatia 3-0?

From that performance it looked to me like the press have been blowing a load of smoke up Foden's ass all year.  Better teams will look at that and see that if you attack England and put them on the back foot, their defence is suspect.

Saw a headline on ESPN this morning "Bellingham bends Euro 24 to his will"

His celebration on the final whistle of a ropey 1-0 win when they were hanging on for most of the second half was nothing short of embarrassing

Remind me more of the honey monster than mentality monsters

He's a little p***k. Was despised by his team-mates at Dortmund.

It was the penalty stuff he was at with Kane in the CL semi final that put me right off. Think that last comment describes him well.

Gerard O’Neill

I thought England looked a bit meh after all the hype (from a good few friends who are terrified they are going to win it as well).

Is Southgate doing a 'Sven'  putting squares in round holes  to try and play all  the big time Charlie's that  the media/public  want?

They said Sven  didn't pick his England teams , the media did then too. Hence Scholes out of position , and Gerrard/Lampard in middle .

I think there is a tendency for England managers  being  afraid to  make the  big calls for fear of being slaughtered .

The only man I had a  bit of respect for , was Capello around the captaincy thing  . He wanted to keep Terry as captain, but he was told he must be stripped of it. So he  said f**k you , and walked.
