Top class, proven centre back is needed more than anything. Cost should be irrelevant. If they are to play a 3-5-2 system then I think the most influential player on the team is the centre of the 3.

Benatia of Roma would be a great signing as a centre half. Evans, Vermaelen and Benatia a decent back 3.

I would have thought given the new system that a centre half would have signed rather quickly to get him used to the system. With the new season starting next week I'm rather worried that all LVG's eggs are in the one basket trying to sign Vermaelen who as reports are saying Arsne Wenger is only willing to sell abroad and not to a rival!

The Vermaelen deal appears to be off, Arsenal wanted a swap deal and United wouldn't do that.

When did Vermaelens stock rise?

I thought he was at best average and was surprised that a big club like Barca would be after him.

He is a decent player - and would have had more confidence in him then Jones or Smalling. He has been unlucky withinjuries. Van Gaal is planning to sign 2 defenders so he wouldnt have been the only defender signed.

A lot of talk about Blind too.  Surprised at this stage that the midfield is being left as it is.  Still no ball winner in there and very little athleticism.  Who has been told they are being shown the door?

That's obviously why Vidal is being pursued.  A bit like last summer in many ways,  lots of talk about doing deals but each one seems to be falling at the last second,  is it another PR stunt?

Perhaps a PR exercise but at this stage with Herrara and Shaw this summer is already much better than last. Throw in the signing of Mata at Christmas and Utd start this season much stronger than this time last year. I expect another 2 or 3 signings yet.

A few years ago I thought Vermalean was very good, but how he suddnely could barely get a game last season in an average Arsenal side worried me with regards to rumours of a potential transfer to United.  In saying that, him for Smalling should be a no brainer.

would think vermaelen would play on the left in a back three.  I think Evans and smalling are (were) good but have lost confidence since going to utd having not played enough.
johnny evans is rubbish. made rio Ferdinand look like a defender.

interesting to see if and who utd get.

also interested to see if Van gaal is the real deal or a dutch version of chief spoofer 'arry 'triffic' redknapp
