Quote from: andoireabu on January 25, 2024, 06:02:57 PMThe Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes is a good read. Same author wrote I Am Pilgrim which is one of the few books I've ever read more than once.
Am I right in saying there is a sci-fi element to it? I like sci-fi and like I Am Pilgrim a lot but I have my reservations about this one.

Yeah but so badly done. Was a normal run of mill book then last section went of on a massive tangent. I'm still not sure if I like the book. Just felt the sci fi bit was like an add on at end and not consistent with rest of story.
Aye that's in line with a review I read. Will pass.
It was a bit of a random turn right enough that I wasn't expecting but I still enjoyed it. Not as much as Pilgrim though

Private Joker: I wouldn't shit you. You're my favorite turd!

Read Michael Richard's (Kramer from Seinfeld) autobiography, Entrances & Exits. Some very interesting anecdotes and stories but probably not as funny as I thought it would be tbh. He's obviously a pretty deep & serious thinker about things, a bit highbrow, even pretentious at times - IMO anyway.

Just finished The Wager. A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann (who also did Killers of the flower moon). It's not a novel, but more of a summation of historical accounts.  That said though, it reads very easily and I found it an interesting tale.

I could see this as a movie too.

Just finished reading Big Dunc the autobiography.  He's some cracking. Great stories from the good 'old days of football

An Watcher

Did he tell the one in there about slagging off Tony Mowbray's dead wife.  Way below the belt and something I'll always associate with that sc**bag

Sad to see the recent passing of American author Martin Cruz Smith. Created the fictional Moscow police investigator Arkady Renko who was first introduced in Gorky Park, a magnificent thriller set in Moscow (and other places). Renko appeared in several more sequels of varying, but mostly excellent quality. Smith, who also wrote quite a number of other books, had a rare ability of being able to tell a story in nearly every sentence.

Reading Limmy's Autobiography, got it for £3.55 of Amazon used books, first I'd heard of that service tbh.

Very funny guy, shocking that he's never made it into the mainstream. Don't think any of his stuff was ever shown outside of BBC Scotland on terrestrial TV back in the day.

Didn't know he had an autobiography but his YouTube videos are class. Should see what he says about James Corden/Cilla Black lol.

Limmy is brilliant #Yoker

DeeDee, Jacqueline McCafferty & Falconhoof are 3 all time great characters imo. Apparently Limmy had a series lined up for Falconhoof but BBC Scotland turned it down! Huge mistake.

Raymond Day the psychic medium and Mr Mulvaney are great.
