Contrarian seeks attention.

Becoming too predictable

Contrarians start contradicting themselves.
It's always about the hot take rather than a consistent view.

The only man that has maintained his stances over the years is Paul Kimmage, but he's done it by realising he got his W on the Lance Armstrong scenario and offers few opinions / nails his colours to the mast anymore - bar calling people cheats /c***ts or whatever.

Calling Kimmage a journalist is pushing it these days. His articles are just a transcript (with PK: and XX: denoting who's speaking) of conversations with him fcking and blinding as if that makes it hard hitting and more honest.

Let's be honest, do any northern nationalist/ republicanas really give an eff what they put on their bonfires? They are on the way out, to be pitied more than anything. Nobody I know honestly cares what they do

I'd say most people down south are confused as to why the bonfires that have insulting effigies or are dangerously tall, aren't just banned I.e. tell the organisers they have X days to take them down.
I realise that's far too simplistic, but it really shouldn't be.

Fair play to Kimmage. He has managed to make a career out of two hobby horses...They're all on drugs...and...It's a huge weekend for Rory McIlroy.

Trying to explain loyalist "bonfires" in the north of Ireland to an American

I wonder if Sinn Fein could use environmental laws to go after the bonfires?

Basically play up the green angle and say they need to be limited because of how polluting and damaging they are to the environment?

imtommygunn

Safety concerns for people at the bonfires and surrounding houses as well as environmental issues are things anyone should go after (in a normal society). Shouldn't matter if sf or not. In reality they should be let do their thing but in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. (A lack of sectarianness would help but not going to happen).

Rossfan

Sectarianess is the whole point of course.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

imtommygunn

Yeah. It's not feasible to take the whole thing away though.

The "green angle" is precisely the reason anyone should "go after" the bonfires.

The fact you're suggesting they should "play up" the environmental disasters that are the bonfires to achieve another political goal only serves to fuel the narrative that nationalists are determined to attack and eliminate the culture of the other side and are underhanded enough to do it under the guise of something else.

Wildweasel74

Hardly can do that, when they are particular shy of solutions to clean up our rivers.

Only our rivers run free...but not from slurry and potassium nitrate
