It's a wonder they keep the players at such a high level, only competitive games they get is in the Ulster series and then if they make it to the All Ireland Semi so that's only 3 competitive matches a year. The men playing county hurling have that benefit to keep them sharp but their representation there is relatively low

Is the question not why do the limited number of clubs in Derry that play hurling continue to be so far behind.

Surly there's an overlap in schools and County panels were they have a template of the standards required.
There are lads on Derry county panels who wouldn't get near Slaughneil team. Its a really sub-standard set up.

Slaughtneil walk to a reserve hurling Championship tonight, dished out 3 hammerings along the way, does anyone know if you can still play reserve hurling if you have made a senior appearance?

Same as football, once you play in a knockout Senior game, player is ineligible for reserves.

Only 3 Derry clubs availed of the GAA hurling start up packs. Faughanvale Magilligan and Castledawson the county could really do with a few more clubs introducing hurling.

Defintely, Ulster is lacking big time in the small ball

That rumour does the rounds every year, maybe has a bit more credence this year since Limavady are on a high

Apparently thats definitely true although the lad that told me also said that Gormley starting corner forward for Glen, and Barton CHF for Newbridge and that might be true.

With just the u16 football finals to play and no venues up yet, I've noticed alot of the underage finals have been on the back pitches at Owenbeg, I dont think theyre appropriate for such a big occasion for the kids and their families. Pitches in awful condition, poor floodlights and no dugouts. Plenty of good club grounds which could have been used which is usually the case

GTP

Might as well have a guess at weekend games
Glen v Magherafelt        Glen - AET -1
Newbridge v Slaughtneil    S'Neil  - 2

Foreglen v Limavady        Limavady - 3
Greenlough v Glenullin    Greenlough - 4

Moneymore v Doire Trasna  Moneymore -5
Slaughtmanus v Glack    Slughtmanus -2

I would agree on the back pitches at Owenbeg - the lack of dugouts is very strange, it was noticeable at Feile with players sitting along the sideline, making it look a bit amateur. I would think venues will be fixed after tonight as potential for Ballinascreen to be in 2 finals so might be waiting for that.

U16A hurling final between kevin Lynches and Slaughtneil is set for that back pitch in Owenbeg tonight
