Quote from: shawshank on March 30, 2025, 03:55:28 PMI listened to a podcast where Horse Devlin a while back, can't recall the name of the podcast, took responsibility for the keeper fiasco in the Donegal game. He said he was forceful in persuading Harte to go with it. The Chamber one is a real puzzle as my lad is pal with a few Bellaghy cubs from school and he is not injured & playing with Bellaghy.

Seems to have been a number of players that were on the u20 squad last year (a few starting / getting significant gametime) that didn't make the panel this year, when they were in their final year at that level. Seems really strange leaving them out.
Personally think its a really good sign from management, you don't walk onto Derry squads, you aren't guaranteed a place because you were there the year before. And for the new lads, if you are showing well in clubs, schools, Universities you will get a chance.

If your walking off and u20 squad the senior inter county football is definitely too much for you.

B O'connor, C Chambers, D McPeake, were on last yr panel. Underage this yr but not on it. Spiers, E Higgins, and J Murray started last yr final either on the bench or outer panel.

It says a lot for the quality of the current Derry u20 substitutes' bench when the star of the  2023 All - Ireland winning minor final team, Conall Higgins of Magherafelt, did not make the match - day squad for the recent game against Armagh.

Mal mentioned a few key players missing due to injury during commentary on last week's game, Higgins maybe 1 of them? Can't mind

Yeah don't see the big deal about a few of last year's players not involved.

Derry were bt after extra time in the Ulster final against Tyrone last season, truth is they had the win and blew it. Tyrone went on to win the All Ireland. Your trying to tell me 3/4 players who played in that final aren't good enough to get on this yrs panel next mind play and btw they are a year older therefore better players than last season. I thinks its insulting to them.

Some of the younger players could have developed at different rates though. Also I think, as seems to be the way with Derry, your defense and midfield were as good as anything but your forwards were limited enough. Tyrone won the semi and final handy enough so you're obviously strong too.

when did age start dictating how good a player anyone is?

maybe the lads who moved up from minors are better players that what was there already! They all ireland winners after all.

If they good enough to play a yr underage, against a very good Tyrone team that won the all-ireland, they good enough this Yr. Chambers and Higgins (Dungiven) in particular are strange omissions.

Is in the panel, could well be 1 of the few carrying injuries atm

Armagh 0-13 v 2-24 Derry
30 points a 17 point win, why at this stage are there complaints about the squad selection?

You'd almost think they'd been hammered in the first game reading some of the comments here. Embarrassing stuff. Are some of us just never happy?  ::)

Completely agree with the bit in bold.
Derry had, imo, the better players and from what I saw at the game I felt management had to take responsibility for the loss. Derry had I would say 80% of the possession but play was slow and wouldn't shoot until it was on a plate, then if Tyrone turned it over they attacked at pace and scored goals. Tactics lost/won the game.
I'll not comment on any individual players as I don't know enough about them tbh.
