Tonight was this team's 3rd/4th game playing with an entirely new set of rules which have fundamentally changed the game of 'football' (for the better? Remains to be seen).

Murray looked bright. Tohill showed great athleticism for the goal. Rogers & McGuigan not long back with the squad. Was it perfect? No. I agree Lynch may not be suited to the role of what a goalkeeper is used for in the new rules, but we need to find alternatives during the league.

2023 - We played our strongest team in every NFL game and didn't have a strong panel come championship.
2024 - We won the league. where did it get us?

We need to find players & a style of play with the rules. Have a pit of perspective ffs.
You do realise it was January for Tyrone too? they had 5/6 new faces who seemed to slot perfectly into their way of playing and definitely got to grips with new rules a lot quicker.
Awful display by Derry, flat all over the pitch, basic stuff dropping balls while soloing, 15 yard kick passes going astray, 25 yard shots wide on more than one occasion. And with 5 mins to go kick outs going to a player who has his back to the ball.
I have no issues with being beat by better team but to roll over would be the main problem here.

Derry played bad, but we're a pt up with 15mins to go, missed 2 scoring chances, then give away the goal.different in fitness showed last 10mins.

Yes and no.

Tonight was Tyrone's 8th or 9th game of the season with the same group of players. The 5/6 new players you talked about have been training & playing with their teammates & the new rules since October/November. With the Errigal lads still due to come back in, they've had the same core group all that time. The new faces have had time to bed in.

Wasn't the penalty for collective training before 7th December & playing challenge games before 1st January the deduction of two league points & loss of home advantage in a league game?

Time for our celebrity President to clamp down on the rule breakers. (Wasn't Malachy also a rule maker?). This is the reason JB scrapped the McKenna cup.  It's not a level playing field, 2025 especially. Thats why perspective is important.

Would hardly say it's not a level playing field all players will have to adapt to the rules. In what way are Derry disadvantaged more than anyone else? Their inability to get a management team to late on is on the county board no Jarlath Burns.

We were missing 4 certain starting players in cluckie, paudie, mckinless and loughlin. We were in the lead after an hour. Tohill was making his debut and up against a really good experienced player. The big difference for me was the bench, tyrones made a big impact and ours didn't. We need to develop a stronger panel for the long term so relegation wouldn't be a disaster as armagh showed last year.

Armagh were playing division two last year. It is fair to say that the best 8 teams are in division one this year so be two decent teams going down.

Certain groups of players would cope with relegation reset themselves and turn their season around. Unfortunately this group have yet to show they can turn the pattern of a game around nevermind the pattern of a season.

Paudi was struggling to hold his position before he was injured, I think fully fit back 6 he wouldn't have made it last year. With Mc Kaigue now gone he should get back in. His speed over 15/20m needs to improve, would love to see CD get run in Midfield with Rogers dropping into centre half back. Expecting Mc Evoy to go to Full back

I'm trying to work out which of these two posts is the most ridiculous... It's tough! 😀

Happy NY Derry men. Confident we'll be back in the mix next year starting with a good NFL
2 out of 3 ain't bad with the 3rd issue of we need a midfielder very evident.
Paudi Mc grogan analysis will wait to later on the year

I think it highlights the standard of Derry hurling, players on that Derry squad who don't start for their clubs.

Don't think he's good enough to be honest but Derry need a full panel.

Limited in numbers so need all hnds to the pump. Be a difficult league this yer. Very competititive with Down, Kildare and Kerry etc. Teams will take points off each other.

Main aime for Derry is the CR later in year. Favourites for that.

I see Paddy tally is saying the goalkeeper coming up is ruining the game. Wrong time to be complaining about it if you ask me. Did he not know this would happen before the game, especially with Morgan but he kept Lynch glued to the line.

marty34

Lynch needs to work on his fitness. Decent keeper but very pedestrian going back to his own goals.

I like the 1 V 1 throw in.
Go and solo is good.

3 V 3 inide needs more time but will probbly work.

Not so sure about the kick out or 2 pointers.

Weather conditions and soft pitches will dictate the game for a few months.  Will know better when the ground hardens up and the sun is higher in the sky. Will judge the new rules better then.

Ryan, 3 and 6 were hardly left field calls now. The Paudi nonsense was and is. I take no delight in pointing this out again, none whatsoever.
Cannot wait to get the big man back, we could time this rightly with NL,plucky Clucky, and Paudi all coming back during the league, fresh for championship.

Good luck to the Shamrocks today

jb77

What's the word with clucky anyway, will he come back this year?

Don't like Tally giving out about the 12v11 thing Lynch is more than capable of doing it for us yet we just didn't plan for it.

Not sure the new rules will suit us Lynch's kickouts have too high a trajectory and our midfield isn't strong enough aerially to win the ball we'll need.

Agreed. It worries me that Tally didn't seem to think this was going to be a tactic before this game.
If he doesn't adapt to what he learned from this game then we have issues, but for now we have to give him time to adapt to the new rules and get us sharper.

Lynch is fit enough lads, and he's fast enough. Probably one of the best showstoppers in the game and his kickouts are good, though sometimes a little slow.
We don't have a better gk option that I know of.

We'd a lot of sloppy passes and dropped ball, we're 2nd to break balls, and on more than one occasion struggled to vend down far enough to pick a ball up. So fitness needs to improve too, but that will come.
