Quote from: Wildweasel74 on January 15, 2026, 06:03:29 PMThese days football near a big 4 or 6 in round the middle 8, Glass went up for a ball last night with 2 Donegal men and 3 below him, dont know why our other men we so badly placed.. That why i feel we need McAvoy out in the half back line and keep with McGrogan full back at the minute, and look at 1 of Higgins. Glass, Rodgers in the Half forward line and the other 2 in midfield. Rodgers will be Derrys future midfielder but plenty filling out to do.

Agreed with McEvoy in half back and McGrogan full back. McEvoy much better in half back line.
Agreed with that midfield/half forward line up

I'd be cautious about predicting U20s into holding down future positions in the team.

That jump isn't just about talent. It means committing to the physical work needed to be in top condition, accepting the lifestyle sacrifices around social and relationship life, finding work that allows the flexibility senior county football needs, and having strong family support to help with the inevitable setbacks.

Ability gets you noticed, but it's the commitment and support around the player that decides who makes it at senior level. Only time tells that.
It's an interesting point which I would largely agree with. However, to counter I seen a post tonight which said Donegal had 7 lads who were 21 or under who played some part of the McKenna cup final. People will say it's the McKenna cup and a number of those boys will maybe not see much game time the rest of the year but it makes you think what are Derry doing to transition our very successful underage teams.

I'll leave you with this, I believe one of the u20 team from last year got minutes in the McKenna cup (Sean Young made a sub appearance) and only two of our most recent all Ireland winning minor teams were named in the squad, Tommy Rogers and Eamonn Young but didn't get on the pitch.

Of names I would select from U20s last year who could have reasonably played this years McKenna Cup

Ruairi Forbes - Sigerson
Danny McDermott - Sigerson
Ryan McNicholl - Club Series
Luke Grant - Maybe - Sigerson regardless
Tommy Rogers - Injured
James Sargent - Injured
Conall Higgins - Sigerson
James Murray - Sigerson
Eamon Young - Could have, Only 18 at the same time
Sean Young - Played 1 game, illness for the second
Oisin Doherty - Maybe that level, not called up

Wildweasel74

There about 3 maybe 4 of Donegal panel there played on the Macrory final last year. I understand we be holding off until the U20 to its over, which i think the correct way. Only guy not on the panel is Magill of Lavey who somwbody said is injured.

3 of those players didnt even start on the U20's last year for one reason or another. I wouldn't expect too much too soon, it's physically a huge step up.

Does anyone know if we have a development panel in place this year? I believe we had one last year and it feels like a good way to keep boys in the system after u20, and everything that comes with that i.e high performance training on and off the field.

My guess for Meath

1. R Scullion
2. C McCluskey
3. P McGrogan
4. D Baker
5. C Doherty
6. G Mckinless
7. R Forbes
8. C Glass
9. B Rogers
10. E Doherty
11.
12. P Cassidy
13. S McGuigan
14. N Loughlin
15. L Murray

Forbes moves out if McEvoy is fit imo, not sure about no.11 dont want to rile anyone up on a Monday

Bradley from the screen must be injured? He hasn't featured yet. Thought he did well last year and imo is a more aggressive and physical natural defender than Baker. Higgins has to play at Mf, its obvious we are struggling physically on the long kickouts, was a problem last year and further emphasised last wednesday V Donegal.  Our ball winning in this position will be a problem we have to fix.

Bradley had to get a small op which is why he missed the McKenna Cup games, understand he should be fit again now for the league.
Agree on Higgins, even as a WHF dropping into midfield for kickouts - he was very impressive in the club championship last year and a couple of the latter games for Derry.

I think he has to start some of the new lads just to show the opportunities are there.

Not sure Mc Guigan will be risked if not needed, maybe last 20mins.
We definitely have an overload of really good Half backs and CD is probably the best of them but I always tempted to say he should go CHF just to see how he goes.

I'd be surprised if we see McEvoy at all on Saturday

I think the teams picked so far all have merit. One thing to note about Meath is their size. Similar to Donegal they have several 6.2+ men so that will be a factor given our performance against Donegal. We need to up our return on kickouts.

There was no development panel last year, it was a gaa board myth. The way we played last year the whole thing looked developmental ;D

I'd say that's not a million miles away if McEvoy isnt playing.
I also think one of the downeys will likely start in place of Forbes - only because they played in mckenna cup and Meenagh/RG used to do that.

Why was Dan Higgins not playing in any McKenna cup games?
