Finbar Reilly has pulled out of the running for Cavan manager leaving Westmeath manager Dermott McCabe with a clear path to take on the job.

Absolute mess from Cavan county board if they don't look outside now to allow a competitive process instead of handing it to McCabe.

Managerial appointment processes in Cavan are seldom too cerebral. These are the same people that appointed Mattie McGleenan, remember, and a whole host of others subsequently pursued by absolutely no other county board afterwards. They're seldom too considered, but now that the whole focus is on the shiny new stadium it'll be given even less thought than usual. Fwiw, McCabe has a decent enough reputation locally in managerial know-how terms, but he's inheriting a bit of a dog's dinner of older guys reaching the end and players without a winning mindset/weak mentality. We could and should be doing better, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Why didnt McCabe not first step down as Westmeath manager before he accepted the nomination for the Cavan position?

I don't know the ins and outs. It's a weird setup as he's employed by Cavan County board already as a Games Development Officer. Maybe he was hedging his bets to stay in Westmeath if he didn't get the Cavan gig, or didn't want to appear presumptuous by stepping down in anticipation of what now looks like a coronation rather than an appointment.

I thought that might happen alright.
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

growing business demands, plus travel and time challenges reasons given. Clare's last match was 8 weeks ago it took him that time to reach that conclusion and had it nothing to do with the recent news that Kerry and Cork will be seeded for the 2026 Munster championship?

His heart was never in it. Seeding and best player Emmet McMahon injured for next year for were easy excuses for him to leave. Second Kerry manager in a row to leave them in lurch instead of resigning straight away.

Should give job to someone local like Michael Neylon or Dermot Coughlan.

New Cavan manager which means Westmeath are now without a manager.

QuoteThe Cavan County Board are delighted to confirm that Dermot McCabe has been appointed as manager of the Cavan Senior Football Team for a three-year term following ratification at this evenings Cavan GAA county management meeting.

This decision is subject to ratification by the
county committee.

The Gowna clubman enjoyed a successful playing career with Cavan from 1995 to 2009. Dermot emerged on the Cavan team that lost the 1995 Ulster Senior Football Championship (SFC) final to Tyrone and helped Cavan reach the 1996 All-Ireland Under 21 Football Championship final.
In 1997, Dermot played on the Cavan team that won the Ulster SFC. He won an All Star that year becoming Cavan's 2nd winner of that accolade  . Dermot played for Ireland against Australia in the International Rules Series on 2 occasions in 1998 and 2001.
At club level Dermot won 6 Cavan Senior Football Championships in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 with Gowna.

Dermot has been part of many successful management teams at club and county level.
In 2011, he was an integral part of the Cavan minor team management when they won the Ulster Championship.
In 2020 Dermot was also part of the management team that won the Ulster Senior Football championship having reached the final in 2019.
As club level, with his home club Gowna had won 2 Cavan SFC championships with Dermot again been an integral part of management team.

Dermot's backroom team will be finalised in due course.

We wish Dermot, his team and the panel the very best and look forward to the 2026 season and in the years ahead.

Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

Nice to see a Rossie man get the gig.  ;D

Has your WUM account morph back into a fake Roscommon poster?

Quote from: Dun Eile on July 30, 2025, 07:06:07 PMUnlike 2022 I think Kerry have a panel now to challenge next year and our main rivals have teams with an older profile.

A content winter.
