I look after our pitch and it costs us approx £4k-£5k a year on maintenance, this consists of about 5-6 applications of fertilizer a year, at least one spray for weeds, 2no verti draining or ground breaking, direct seedind if and when it needs it, scarifying if and when. Then of course you have the 2-3no cuts per week of the grass and the maintenance of the mower and the diesel too.

We are having problems at the minute with rabbits digging holes in the pitch and we have tried everything from ferrets, dogs, guns and still the we bastids are destroying the pitch. Every time i replace a sod they start trying to dig the sod out again...I intentionally keep our grass a bit longer than it should be as we don't have a training pitch and our pitch gets an awful amount of abuse with the teams we have all on the one pitch...so for wear and tear it's better at 50mm-60mm

Wonder who McFall is talking to there.

Nearly sure it's one of the Ulster council men who were running from a 4 wheel drive Mamas and Papas armoured pram.
The grass is even growing  on the roofs of the houses in the background.

We have terrible problems with worms on our pitch!
I shit you not!
The come to the surface and bring up loads of little mounds of soil.
Overtime it makes the pitch really bumpy and uneven.
we cant seem to get rid of the problem at all,.

Orior

My Dad used to cut the grass with an ordinary agricultural reaper - the same machine he used to cut hay and do topping.

By the way, it is well known that in the 1980's the hay in Casement was supergrass, and used to feed Shergar.

Casement Social Club own them. Think they'll be used for bedding for the next sit / lock in

They'd be poor quality by the looks of that grass.

I always assumed football pitches had longer grass as it didn't cut up as much. Hurling on a pitch with long grass is an absolute disaster.
I remember talking to a few lads that play hurling about the length of grass on the pitch and they say while longer grass does make playing low ground strokes and rolling & lifting the ball more difficult and unpredictable, in compensation hitting sideline cuts, ground strokes going up in the air and jabbing the ball on to the hurl are easier to play. Different strokes I guess (pardon the pun).

ground strokes! when's the last time you saw a hurling game?

Owenbeg was borderline too long for even football at last weekends Féile Hurling finals. Unsurprising that no one in authority considered how suitable that length of grass was to the game itself.

Im not, tbh

All i know is we have had many's a  long discussion at committee meetings about worms  :-\

They bring up thousands of small mounds to the surface leaving it very bobbly and uneven.
