Had this discussion with a friend last week  - what was the first championship match outside of an All-Ireland final/semi final to be televised live on RTE?

I give up. When was it?

Canalman

Think it may have been one of the replays in the Dublin Meath games of 1991.

Where's Jimmy Magee when you need him?

macdanger2

I would have guessed earlier than that, maybe late 70s or early 80s - would it have been a railway cup final maybe??

What game did the Sunday game show the highlights of twice because of all the people ringing in saying they missed it first time round?

"Well ! Well ! Well !  If it ain't the Smoker !!!"

Yeah, it was the Tipp/Waterford Munster hurling final which nearly put an end to it such was the flaking Waterford engaged in, brutal carry on! Meath/Dublin was the first non-final shown on live TV, fair bit of flaking in that too.

Connacht Final 1970  ;)

I recalled hearing that there was a connacht final televised in the seventies , so rossfan is right.

QuoteThat same year saw him line out in the halfback line with Mayo minors in the Connacht Final against Galway in Tuam. They lost out to their neighbours that day and Galway went on to win the All Ireland title. The year 1970 marked the first ever live television broadcast of a GAA provincial final and both the minor and senior games were transmitted live form Tuam on that occasion.Courtesy of the Mayo News

Any craic

The 1966 Ulster Senior Football Final was filmed by BBC, strangely enough, something to do with equipment and trucks available after the 1966 World Cup in England. I can't remember if the game was actually shown Live though it could have been. There is certainly no surviving footage of it, either way, unfortunately.
