Won easy enough at the finish, but missed an absolute bagful.

I see Omagh CBS have just got through to the final of the 4th year competition, having already won the 2nd year and 5th year in this school year. This after back to back Hogan's is some going. What was the craic up there with the entry requirements, it used to be a grammar until recently, now anyone can go? They are getting the whole county of Tyrone west of about Pomeroy, this could go on for a while

50% transfer test I think it is. They don't get the schools they used to - Greencastle, Loughmacrory and Carrickmore and now nearly exclusively Dean Maguirc Carrickmore. Beragh would also be split between Omagh, Carrickmore and Ballygawley. Likewise Trillick splits between Omagh and Enniskillen.
So the clubs they have their catchment from is less, but there is serious work taking place in the school and some of the feeder clubs - Fintona, Drumquin, Drumragh - have serious work going on as well, added to the work that happens at tradtionally strong clubs like Omagh, Killyclogher and Dromore. It is certainly a prosperous period for the school.

30 years in the making, minimum

The coaching expertise within the school is high end club/county standard, it rubs off

In that match today the h-t score was 10-4, full time was 10-6, 2 points scored in a half of football played by u15's, thats some going!!

Anyone any idea how the Ulster schools all stars are picked? Could not believe it when I seen only 1 St.Pats maghera player on the team considering they are macrory and hogan champions.

Wildweasel74

They be a trial game, maybe 2 earlier in the yr i think, team picked off that. School only send a few players I think.

As far as I'm aware it's done through a series of trials. Depending on the level the school plays at dictates how many players they can send to the trials i.e macrory school can send 3, maclarnon 2 etc (not exact figures). If a player gets sent off in the school year they cannot be selected to go to trials. It's probably unfair on the schools that make it further into competitions as they may not want to risk players getting injured in the trials when they have important games coming up

Strange enough way to pick the teams then, would make more sense to pick them based of performances in respective competitions in my opinion.

Absolutely. College All Stars should have really died a death by this point as the teams rarely reflect reality.

American colleges have this kind of thing nailed.

Coaches nominate opposing players who impress them each week.

Those who get the most nominations over the season, make the all star team.

Wait to you have a look at the previous 2 years. The back to back Hogan Champs only picked up one College All Star over the two years.

You'll find most of the Trillick lads go to Omagh cbs...most of their panels are littered with Trillick lads..
Someone was telling me a few weeks back 18 clubs feed into Omagh cbs.... no school can match that
Go East as mentioned before and you've 3 schools all playing top level colleges football in the proximity of 4-5 mile..Academy, Donaghmore & Cookstown..Errigal lads now tend to stay in Ballygawley which further dilutes, years gone by they would've went either Omagh or Academy direction
Donaghmore & Galbally - 2 of the strongest clubs at youth feed Donaghmore convent
Ardboe, Moortown with the exception of a few pull towards Cookstown
Academy now really only pull from the Dungannon/coalisland/pomeroy area, and a bit of north Armagh and are 100% academic entry path
Coupled with the catchment area, and there's no doubt the strong football culture in the school
i would expect Omagh to dominate schools football for a while

Their Dalton team started training in October, for a competition starting in mid Jan..we all heard Diarmuid McNultys podcast on the McCrory cup preparations over the past few years...  I don't believe other schools are putting in the same shift, certainly not schools I know..

College All Stars have been a joke for a while. Holding Trials before Hogan Cup finals and so on.

I think it's a testament to the collective of St.Pats Maghera that they won the Hogan without many absolutely outstanding individuals (of course they're a team of great young players). The only one I think is possibly hard done by is their goalkeeper.
For example, St.Mary's Magherafelt have 4 players starting for Derry U20's whilst still at school. St.Pats have none.

marty34

Maybe controversial here but I'd bin them college All Stars and all county academies up to U16.

No need for them at U14 and U15 at county level.

I'd love to see how many of these academy players at U14 etc. actually go on to play U20 for county level.

Percentage would be what?

Then move that on to senior county level - players who play U14 academy then goes on regularly to play senior fo their county.

I'd love to seeca report/study done on that.

Let the clubs develop them
