Why would anyone going to the Open want to be slipping out to watch the hurling on the final day of the golf?

He bought the tickets knowing he was going to Portrush ffs! Some people look for problems

A myriad of reasons and I know of numerous people who did it

Especially after Schaeffler made it a non-contest

Who went to find a pub in Portrush to watch the hurling?

Quote from: gallsman on July 20, 2025, 11:32:14 PMEoghan Rua would be the closest club by a considerable distance to Portrush. It's 10 mins away. You'd be talking half an hour to Ballycastle.

Must be a GAA wasteland up there so is it?

Coleraine and Portstewart hardly strongholds either?

Despite winning 2 Derry seniors in recent years but I presume that was down to sheer population in the area.

It absolutely was not down to population. ER had maybe 5 McGoldrick brothers on the team and the father as manager and they won the Championships with limited panels and on sheer tactics and determination.

On the main issue any small bit of research you'd have known you're not going to get the Hurling in Portrush. I'm sure there were a few bars in Portstewart that would have shown it though.

Who left the golf to watch the hurling - yes there were loads of people doing it

I think it was after the golf on the saturday that he just asked the barman were they showing it.

Think he was actually going to the match itself.

In that case the Loyalist hate fest march going past the window of the bar at that time, should have given him enough of clue whether they would have been showing it  ;D  ;D

Yeah I suppose it's like going up Sandy Row and asking if the Royal bar is showing the game!

Was the Coleraine team not more of a Portstweart team?

Strange then that  they  have Coleraine in their name

Having said that, I've been around the bars in Galway and Mayo when on holiday , looking  for one to show  the football QF and semis. Most showing soccer or nothing .  Have had to go into  some and ask the barman if he'd  put the match on.  Sometimes they wouldn't  know what or  who was playing . It's not just Portrush

Was in Donegal a few years back and wanted to watch the hurling final. Celtic on every TV  :o

Started off in Coleraine. Wouldn't have had a ground for a good bit. Maybe had to use school pitch for a bit tho I could be wrong. Then bought decent land when it came up

The somewhat significant difference there being that the barmen in Galway and Mayo you refer to (who I imagine are few and far between) probably have a different reason for not showing it than because you're a dirty, stinking fenian who wants to watch other dirty, stinking fenians play a dirty, stinking, fenian sport.
