The world is not a better place today. The world is fucked. Bin Laden is neither here nor there.
Our addiction to oil is going to set off unstoppable climate change during this century. We are destroying our planet.

There is no right or wrong and at some stage you've to hitch your wagon to one of two very different ideologies - whether conciously or not.

That's where we disagree, Puck. If there is no right or wrong, what is the point? Of anything? And hitching our wagons to ideologies has been the cause of most of the evil that the human race has brought upon itself. A plague on ideologies of all ilks. Why can't we choose reason instead of ideology?

I believe hardy was asserting that a sizeable number of decent human beings the middle east would react in a similar way if the scenario he spoke about did take place due to the very real devastating impact that US/UK foriegn policy has had on their lives. Rather than being a devils advocate, he's just highlighting that opinions on these matters (like 1916) will come down to perspective and once you put yourself in the perspective of someone from these areas, it starts to become very difficult to see who's right and who's wrong and where the shades of grey are. Truth is it's a very ugly world when you delve into global politics.

The choice as GW said comes down to a rather limited choice of "You are either with us or against us" regardless of whats right or wrong. Most people are happy with that choice as it's in their best interests and life is too short. They're bad and we're good...end of?
This is difficult to reconcile because on the hand Bin Laden is dead which is good and the chances of a Democrat staying in the White House for 4 more years has increased which is also good.

On the other hand like many I criticised America for taking out Saddam Hussein of their own making on spurious grounds. Is this any different? They went into a sovereign country and killed an unarmed suspect. Who polices the police?

The image of the White House staff watching the live footage (heard it described as a snuff movie) leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
This whole episode will only encourage anti Western sentiment in the Muslim world.

Is it though? Surely it's no worse without Osama, though with the threat of serious retaliation is it much better? How important was Osama sitting in a house in Pakistan really?

Skull - I think we are both saying the same thing - albeit from slightly different angles.

There is no right or wrong and at some stage you've to hitch your wagon to one of two very different ideologies - whether conciously or not.

After that second sentence Puck, I can assure you we are not saying the same thing.

I'm also very unclear as to what you believe to be the ideology of the west? ...Please don't say freedom and democracy because the dictator ridden and oppressed middle east populations would soon put that one to bed :-\

I believe the USA should walk away from Afghanistan now, They can claim a victory of sorts, the TAPI pipeline seems to be going ahead under the new Afghan government.

The question is, do the soldiers get to go home or are they redeployed in Libya/Syria etc.
It won't be the next manager but the one after that Meath will become competitive again - MO'D 2016

The Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan in 1989 claiming victory.  They handed over power to a communist government and the country was relatively stable. It all blew up 3 years later.  Afghanistan is like Somalia. It's a failed state .

Last year the US spent $120bn fighting its war in Afghanistan and  Pakistan. The GNP of Afghanistan is $8bn. Do the maths.
