Sam was the man, I used to love seeing him landing. 50 to 50 and no further! In fairness he rarely got it wrong. Wasn't afraid to walk 50 yards with the ball if he got backchat!  Lads Paudie is fussy but consistent. Also his family and mine srew lifelong friends so mind the personal stuff please.

Mid Down Gael

Consistently bad and controversial. When he needs an escort off the pitch in many games with the crowd jeering that should tell its own story.

Are there no moderators here? some of this stuff is libelous.

If Paudie Hughes is reading this, he'll be loving it.

A whole GAAboard thread devoted to him? Talk about fanning the flames of his ego!

FFs lads lets not loose the run of ourselves and call for the mods every 5 secs whne there is something you don't like. I am not on here criticising the person i am speaking about his performance as  a ref. what he does in everyday life is his own business but i am entitled to comment on the performance of a ref just as i am the performance of a player. Surely we won't get jail for that.
Assessing and giving an opinion on a ref is one thing, calling him a cheat and some of the personal abuse that has been posted is not imo acceptable.

I am not saying he is a cheat in everyday life i am saying that he has cheated us on the football field. I am also not refering to Paudie Hughes but Ollie Hearty. I actually have plenty of time for Paudie anytime i meet the lad i have a good bit of banter with him and when he refs our games he is fussy but he is consistant for both teams. Some refs will give it 60-40 or 70-30 and it is this that annoys me
I never forget a face but in your case I will make an exception.

I would say some refs have a right snigger to themselves when they see that they are down to ref certain clubs... Not naming any names...

Did Benny Coulter not say last year that, in his opinion, the two best referees in Ireland were Pat McAneney and Paudie Hughes?

Farrandeelin

Brolly was fairly critical of Paudie Hughes in the Derry-Antrim game last week his column today on the Irish Mail on Sunday. I don't have the link to it, but I bought the paper.

Agree totally. He made less mistakes than most of the players but will get loads for it.

No matter what Brolly says Hughes is one of the better referees.

Also, for what it is worth on first view I thought it was a foul. On replay I thought it was harsh. The only clear cut decision I think he got wrong was the 45 to Cork near the end. I thought it should have been a square ball free out as the old rule applies from frees.

Call it what you like, but I hate when a game becomes more about a referee than the playing.
Of all the refs out there he is the worst with the "I am going to make sure every body knows I am refereeing this game".

Of the top of my head I could name about 10 worse.

Fear ón Srath Bán

Overall, I think he did reasonably well today. He has, however, made absolutely certain that he will be the main topic of conversation, due to his howler of a call on that 'penalty'; there are too many of those contentious calls with this ref, in particular, yet he will not only be indulged, but promoted.

The problem is that you could replace Paudie Hughes name with any other referee and the statement would still be true.
