Are there not a few apps about anyway?

Why does it have to be Java?

I did a google and all that exists are GAA news apps on the android.

Not all android apps need to be java btw...

A gap in the market I sense.

An open source app could be developed for all to use. Said Java really because that's what im most interested in. Could be developed as well for other devices.

2yrs using mainframe and mostly COBOL, JCL gave that up 6months ago to move to a .Net Developer job and so far have dabbled in VB6, Crystal Reports, Transact-SQL, VB .Net and ASP .Net onwards and upwards!

Just do a google for App Inventor and build it yourself. Pretty straight forward.

Seen that big fella, but its not that simple to make a proper app, but its a good way to design the GUI  ;)

Yes but building it using the native libraries is a stupid idea and if you make a web application then it's not really an Android App. You can use the App Inventor but again that is really just a layer over the Java code to make it easy for non Dev's to build applications.

BTW there is no gap in the market, as there is no market for the app your talking about. It would make a good school project but as for trying to make money, I'd forget about it.
